I'm a new bowler with a 165 average.
currently use a black widow pearl.
I plan on buying the new hot sauce pearl.
with the drilling layouts do i want low track medium track or high track?
I use the strong layout.
which track would give me a better advantage. I also cup the ball.
more or less asking which track gives the best advantage.

well steve, this is also a question I asked not too long ago. To be honest, you dont choose your track, the track chooses you. The track means where your oil track is on the ball. It determines your PAP which then affects how it is drilled and the way it will react.
By the way, Welcome to the Boards. They are full of wonderful information. Bubba Ray is the moderator, so what he says goes as for behavior. Many smart and helpful people on these boards and also many many years of experience. i hope my explanation of a track helped. If you have any questions, no question is a dumb question and everyone will be happy to help. Just remember everyone is human on here like you and they can have bad days too.

Welcome to the boards.
Walkin is right you don't choose your normal track, if just happens. It's dicated by the release, swing, tilt and rotation you apply to the ball.
So to determine your track (low, meduim or high) you need to determine your PAP (Positive Axis Point). Then you drill the ball off this point.
The PAP is the first ring of oil closet to your fingers, generally speaking. This point is on the opposite side of the ball, if you put a piece of tape on this point the ball will rotate on it for the first 15' or so of the lane before the ball starts it flares.
Here is something I posted a while back, maybe it will clear up some of this for you.
Here is the link to Brunsnick's Video
http://www.brunsnick.com/positive_axis_point.html
In this video he uses a prosect tool to find the PAP.
Here are FOUR methods to finding your PAP. They all work.
1. Armadillo Tool
2. ProSect, explained above in Video
3. Ball Spinner Method, Bubba explained above.
4. Tape on the PAP and roll the ball method.
General Info:
Your PAP is the axis point that you ball will rotate on, before it starts to transition to it's PSA (Preferred Spin Axis) or the Hook Phase of the roll.
Any time you change your release, it will effect your PAP.
Tips on find your PAP:
So when you are finding your PAP roll few ball down the lane with your Spare Ball or Lowest Flaring Bowling Ball. Once you feel you have loosened up, wipe the ball after each shot down the lane. Once you feel you have made you typical "A" game release down the lane, this first flare ring needs to be traced, to find the location of your PAP.
BTW, this "Typical A Games" release will be rolled down the middle of the lane with your normal strike shot release, since thats generally where the most oil is on the lanes.
The Armadillo comes AMF designed by Mo Pinel.
If your track is near your thumb you will have an up coordinate from your grip center line. If you track near your fingers you have an inverted track, which will also be indicated by a down coordinate from grip center. Some people are flush on their grip center line.
Low track Players generally have a over less than 4 1/2".
High Track Players generally have a over greater than 5 1/4".

which is more benificial, being closer or further way from the finger and thumb holes?
as i know you can change your grip/release to get a different track.
so which would be est for more strikes?

As long as you are consistent, it doesn't really matter.

Having a ball drilled to a your normal and hopefully most comfortable release is gonna be the most benefitical thing you could do.
Just make sure you can keep a good strong release (fingers below the equator) and hand behind the ball.

Smooth, let me welcome you too the Hammer Message board. I agree with the others here. What ever ball you choose your track will be the same. You should never try and change your release to change your track. Use your normal release. The ball will react the same for a high track/med track/low track player if they are drilled according to the layout you want. You could change your axis tilt on the ball when it is called for depending on conditions and reaction of the ball. Keep your same release style.

More like, what isn't a hambone http://forums.hammerbowling.com/showthread.php?t=9266&highlight=hambone
this escapes me. the origin of the term "turkey" was in the old days when a bowler scored three strikes in a row, the house would give the bowler and an actual turkey to cook. Given that 4 in a row is an even greater achievment, why just a bone?? Why not the whole pork butt??
Ok, there it is folks, new term for 4 in a row is Pork Butt ;)

Wasn't the term 'hambone' coined by that annoying ESPN announcer?

apparently, it's a term they use in youth bowling.
and Rob brought that to the show.
I had looked that up in the past (can't find that now) , it 's a official term nowadays.
i do not like it that much , now a bit more.
It's the enthusiasm that he brings around with the show that I like. They are getting better now, saying what bowling ball brands and which ball the players are using, what the different drilling are expected to do, the different surfaces, there were twice cat scans already in the show.
The quality of the commentators and the info they are given has improved the last 2 months.

Yes it was the (enter defacing adjective here) Rob Stone's word that he "invented" and started calling 4 strikes. In youth bowling the term hambone is used for a double or 2 strikes in a row, so I dont know where he got it from really. I personally hate the term, but could also be because I hate Stone.

I call doubles, a double bagger! But really who cares what they call 4 in a row as long as you roll it (and keep going)!
As for track, make sure you have a good driller who knows how to help you with your pap and drill accordingly. Once I accepted I was high track and had my balls drilled accordingly, they actually stopped tracking over my thumb.

And don't forget yahtzee or six-pack...
six pack has been said for a lot time, yahtzee is fine with me because there was never really a name for 5 in a row except 5 bagger which really made no sense.
