I've been going through the same thing lately and not until my 298 last week did I feel like I had overcome it but then come to find out it was only for the night lol. I wish I could do that ALL the time but then I might be on tour :D Anyway I don't have any insight on how to fix the problem as I can't fix myself but hopefully someone can give us some info on what they do to just bowl.

Focus on your feet and count your steps walking on the approach, just stare at your mark, and count 1,2,3,4,5 as you walk up the approach. It works for me, but I have the same problem sometimes. Or dont take as much time on the approach, walk up, get your feet set and go.

The problem Chris Barns is having? You mean making a bunch of television appearances in the hardest level of bowling but on winning so much on T.V.?
Chris would not have a problem crushing your league! I couldn't imagine the stress and pressure of making let alone bowling in a PBA television show, I'm sure there is nothing in league that could come close.
But I know your just trying to draw a parallel compassion to mental block. And maybe that's the problem. You might be making too much of your league games. I once read some where to focus in practice and relax in league.

can, i know that hes much better, and has a lot more pressure, but im just saying what most people seem to think. most people think that he thinks too much during the tv show and i seem to be doing that. just looking for suggestions on how to do that, not calling anyone bad

yesterday I just started a silly song when I was in a slump, pumped myself up, and the last 18 frames barely looked at the scoreboard. and guess what 2 clean games.

It is important to point out that competition is not the time to straighten out your game. If you find yourself worrying about all the little things when you are bowling in a league or tournament, you may find yourself scoring worse than if you just threw the ball down the lane without thinking. Put yourself on "autopilot" and don't over-think your game. Quit second guessing yourself. Be free-wheeling and look at the overall picture. Trust your instincts.
If the night is particularly rough, don't let the conditions get the better of you. After several moves or changes, try going back to your basics. Why not move back to your original starting point and reset your mind

When I find myself going down that path of over thinking or if I'm having an off night...I just start striking up conversations about anything other than bowling. The kids...sports...weather...anything but bowling. Sometimes even a song in my head works. When it's my turn...it's like..oh right...bowling. :)

I seem to have the opposite reaction, I tend to not turn my brain on soon enough; especially when it involves a ball change needing to be made. lol

The best and hardest way to to turn it off is not to care if you bowl bad or good. Don't try for that 200 game and that 6 7 or 800 series. Don't try to throw the ball, just throw it. I know it's easier said then done. I say quicksand to myself to remind myself not to try as I am picking up the ball cause the harder you try the faster you sink.

Repeat after me:"Just roll the ball,." Or as we used to say during a baseball game,"Stop thinking so much, you're hurting the team."
Once you take a stance and figure out where you want the ball to go,STOP THINKING!!! Just turn the brain off and let the body go to work. You ought to know how to roll the ball by now, right??? Thinking while swinging is for practice time only.

I always state one rule for my team mates:
When your feet are on the approach your brain is off.
Think about the shot before you get up there and know what you are looking to accomplish. I try to get up there and just KNOW what is going to happen.
My friend Mike has the thinking problem.. but he is also averaging 230 for the summer session. He is what happens when you have too much knowledge :D
Just be confident in your ability and don't try NOT to think, just do it [insert Nike Swish]
