View Full Version : Wrist brace prevent strong hand position on release?

I've been reading the PDF about strong release, and fingers in the 7 and 8 o clock position. I have a wrist brace to help with wear and tear (bowl ~15 games per 2hr session, 3 sessions a week), and to help me keep wrist cupped (I bowl on and off without it, so I dont get 100% dependant).

Does the wrist brace not allowing me to cock it, without locking it in, prevent the strong release/uncoil for max revs?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO22QofF-bA is a link to my release I took. About 225 revs or so, stroke I think? I come around the side of the ball a lot, need to work on the finger lift.

1) Does the wrist brace not allowing me to cock it, without locking it in, prevent the strong release/uncoil for max revs?

2) I come around the side of the ball a lot, need to work on the finger lift.

I cant see the video @ work so I'll just relate my experience.
1) The problem with the brace is that it's hard to get your hand to open up at the bottom of the swing. I found that I have to swing my arm off the the side somewhat to get my hand out of the ball. As I was using it, I found I was loosening the strap in the palm of my hand and reducing the amount of bend at the wrist, to cup it more in the back swing so I could open up my hand at release. It's a great tool to help with hand position
and build strength.

If you search youtube for vmstopgun, there is a video from last october of me throwing my #15 NVD with the brace and a video from last month throwing my #16 bite with out.

2)My finger grips were a little loose causing the ball to come off too soon.
you can remove them, wrap them with a piece of electrical tape, then replace or if they are not glued around the entire circumference, fold over a small piece of paper three times and insert the paper between the grip and the ball to snug them up.

hope this helps.....

I took a look ayt the video and you are right. You are coming around the side of the ball instead of staying behind it with a cupped wrist with the brace on. But I really can't get a good l;ook at your wrist when it is in the swing behind you. Here is a practice little tip I suggest to people who want to stay behind the ball with a cupped wrist.

If you have a cushioned chair or sofa at the house that is not new, stand infront of the chair or sofa with you sliding foot forward pretending you are sliding but standing still. Now get the ball and do your backswing and concentrate on keeping the palm of your hand facing forward or up at the ceiling. When the ball reaches your slide leg then start to turn you hand around the side of the ball. Keep doing this without the brace on and soo it will become natural.

Heh, I need to hurry up and kill a ball so I can practice this outside, wife would kill me if I started tossing 16# wrecking balls at any of her furniture :P

Thanks for the tip though, repetition is key I am sure, will try to figure something out.

That is from me bowling today, best I could get from my vid camera frame-shots.

I also got this

Showing a backup shot release, and a normal release.

I notice some people wobble their ball back and forth changing the angle of the wrist from the top of the swing down to the release. I can imagine this gets more revs, do any of you use it or have any advice for implementing it?

I think I get in a decently strong position but I dont seem to be able to ignite the release around the ball after i am in a stronger position.
