Hi all. I am coming back to bowl after a layoff of around 10 years. All my gear is old and worn so I'd like to buy 2 new balls to get started. I'd like to go with Hammer as I've got some confidence in the product. After some research I am sold on the No Mercy as my 'main' ball but I am unsure about a versatile second ball - the ball to shoot when things are a bit harder or drier. I still want strong pin action so I'm not wanting to chuck any old thing.
I am thinking either the Raw Hammer Doom or the Pure Hammer would nicely compliment the No Mercy - but am I right? And if so, which one?
Appreciate your comments, Pete

I also have the NM as a heavy oil ball. I got the BW set up with the all purpose drilling for the medium oil shot. Trust me, this thing hits hard, even with this layout. My uncle just recently got the Toxic. It also seems to be a good choice when the lanes are in transition.

For dry lanes the Pure is hard to beat!!!! You will need to experiment with it to get what you want but it is VERY VERY versatile. Left in original shape (no sanding etc.) it is very controlable with no surprises and is great for throwing the outside line. The more you sand it the more break you get. It won't be all backend but more of a gradual arc, but it is a GREAT ball. Steve

The BW all purpose would be such a nice back up ball you might use it more than the NM.
I just bought a "third ball" toxic and will have to report back how it fits into mix.

Perhaps I should get both the Pain and the Doom and just see what reaction I get? Pain for oily and Doom for medium? Then I can see if I need a ball for more oil than the Pain can handle or if I need a ball to handle less oil than the Doom can take.
My question here really is this: if I buy the Pain and the Doom are they too similar to be of benefit or can I use them for this purpose?

I would advise the Pain and the Toxic. The Toxic for the light to med and the Pain for the Heavy. These two will work well together from fresh to breakdown.

the NO MERCY is AWESOME!!!! read my comments at this thread: CLICK HERE (http://forums.hammerbowling.com/showthread.php?t=1033&page=2). i think you'll like my analysis. for dry lanes I use my Hammer Red Pearl which is basically a Urethane pancake-ball but I fight the urge the change balls quickly. I will change my approach and adjust as much as possible with my "main" ball b4 switching and I always recommend the same to others. my main ball (3D-Offset) I use in heavy and med oil. as the lane drys up and simply suitcase the ball less. in heavier oil I hold the ball with my thumb at "10-oclock". as it dries up I move it closer to "12-oclock". when it cant be done I switch to my Faball-Hammer Purple or my Red pearl. i dont know a whole lot about the newest Hammer balls but i think the balls that best compliment the NO Mercy would be the Pure Hammer, the Raw Hammer DOOM, or the Hammer Vibe. just my two cents....

if you're really serious about your game, at some point you're going to want to expand your "arsenal" out to at least 4 balls - 1 each for light, medium, and heavy oil, plus a plastic ball for corner pin spares and some splits.
my suggestion would be to go with the medium ball first, plus the plastic ball. after you play around with the medium oil ball for a while you can decide which balls you want to add for both heavier oil and lighter oil.
if you're wanting to go strictly hammer, your only option for a spare ball is the tuff. doom is described by most online retailers as a medium oil ball, also the black widow might fall into this category (especially when compare to the no mercy, which from all accounts i've seen/heard is definitely a heavy oil ball). toxic would probably also fall into the medium oil ball category.
of course alot depends on your style and how you get the balls drilled but a good pro shop guy should be able to take a look at how you throw and help you pick the right ball for you. and don't settle for the first pro shop you go to, i hit like 4 shops in my area over the last 2+ years before i actually found one that took the time to watch me bowl and drill balls accordingly for me.

u use for light?
i'm guessing that the above-quoted statement/question translates as "what do you use for a light oil ball?"...
currently i'm using the following balls:
light oil: rotogrip supersonic
medium oil: rotogrip retro resurrection
heavy oil: rotogrip rs-p
plastic/spare ball: brunswick oakland raiders vis-a-ball
i tried hammers earlier this year, from about the beginning of may til maybe the middle of july, decided i didn't really like the balls so off they went to ebayland, in any case at that time my balls were:
light: pure burgundy
medium: doom
heavy: big deal
plastic/spare: tuff
nothing wrong with the balls themselves from any kind of manufacturing standpoint, but i think they were drilled a little too aggressively for me and frankly i don't believe that you can ever get the intended reaction out of a ball once it has been plugged and redrilled, once a ball has been plugged you are changing the fundamental composition of the ball so that being the case, redrilling them for me was not an option and for that reason the hammers were out. but i am sure that they are all fine balls if that's what you're looking for. in the end i just felt more comfortable going back to rotogrip and having a completely new pro shop drill them up for me alot less aggressively.
