Well it started off bad. I started the Adult Junior league with my son today at 5:00 then bowl my Sunday Doubles at 7.. Well the first league was BAD.... Big ole 507.. HG was 207 (ball change) I just could not get into a groove. Not to mention I was worried about bowling too hard because Saturday when I went to bowl my knee was killing me...
So Jason and I started out 7:00 league. We about s** when we looked at the score sheet before starting. We was giving up 149 pins PER GAME.. OUCH
First game we we shot 509 scratch.. (he shot 254 I shot 255) We made up them 149 in the 5th frame the rest was just working on total..
Second game I shot 194. had a couple of stupid mistakes.. We still won by about 25 ish pins. As the third game started we was already up 55 pins on total so all we had to do was out bowl there scores to win total.
Third game going into the 10th we was tied for the game I was working off a spare Jason had a open they was working off a spare and a open. I bowled last need to mark period..... Rolled the ball and darn near left a 4,6,9 the 4 got kicked by something so I spared the 6,9 that left us needing two pins to win... Which I got 9.. So we took all 9 points. Finished with a 648. WOOO HOOOO..... Much better than last my first set tonight...

One thing is we could never give up from the start when we see how many pis handicap we give away. Idle will tell you , a couple of years ago we gave almost 225 pins per game away and still won all points for the night. It seems like there is no chance when giving that many pins away but it is not something that can not be overcome. A cool head and concentration is all it takes.

last year in my child/adult league for the summer..we were giving up 250+ pins EVERY WEEK.
not just 1 of the weeks....
but we jus bowled our game..had a couple star frames..and we managed to win atleast 5 out of 7 points.
we won the championship...didnt even need a roll off becuz we were in first by more than 7 points. :D

Yep that is pretty much what we had to do.. The first game I knew we was going to make them up quick.. I had 8/ then 4 in a row Jason threw first 5 then 8/ The other two games I just waited till the 7th or so before looking at the total score. Even after one of us threw a bad shot we came back with a X on the board...
Last game I had X X 9/ then dropped my shoulder and put it in the ditch. Shook it off and made the spare then X the next frame.

I have a feeling we will be in the same boat. Except for one other team were pretty even on avg.... But the rest are WAY below us on avg.. were talking one boy (about 8 years old set a 45 avg and one girl (maybe 6 years old) has less than that her series was 54..

Nothing is impossible to overcome if we put our mind to it. Nice bowling.

It amazes me how many people look at handicap and how much they have to give up, and how people can psych themselves out over it. The MOST important thing to remember, is that there is a reason they have that much handicap, because they don't average as high as you do. Most handicap structures end up favoring the higher average bowlers anyways (anything 80 or 90% of X), the only way it is straight up fair is 100% of anything higher than the high average in the league). On my Monday night league, I am the 2nd bowler in our lineup, and I would say that against most of the other teams, I give up at least 50 pins per game, and have given up over 90. Its never impossible to overcome though, a few strikes in a row will get you there almost every time.

Very good point, I guess it is just easy to look at how much you are giving away and let it overwhelm you. But you are absolutely right if you bowl your average you usually will catch up.

True, but is also one of the reasons I hate handicap leagues but am forced to put up with them around here. If a 140 bowler gets hot and shoots 190, theres no way for me to beat them without shooting 260-270 or more depending on handicap structure of the league. But I just go along with it, I know with our team a few years ago the team average was 1100, so we gave up anywhere from 150-320 pins a game just about every week.

Yep I remember that when our team gave away that much and won. but like Rick and I said , Just put our mind to it and shoot avg. or above. And we did idle . That year spelled the league championship for us.

On numerous occasions upon finishing the 7th or 8th frames our team has been down by 80 - 90 (sometimes more) pins and we make it back. Most of the teams witht the low averages/high handicap cannot perform in the 9th and 10th frames.
I usually look up at the pins we are giving up and just have to laugh. Most people do not realize that if everyone shoots average, the higher averages will win.
If the high handicap team gets hot and shoots a big game, I just try and keep my team calm and stay as close as we can to try and make it up for total.
