SEEMS TO BE DRY UNTIL LEAGUE TIME,LATELY ON LEAGUE SEEMS TO MEDHEAVY OIL,DOES IT KIND OF DEFEAT PURPOSE TO PRACTICE ON DRY WHEN ON NITE TO BOWL ITS TOTALLY DIFFERENT?ALSO THEY ARE HALF WOOD AND HALF SYNTHETIC,(AT LEAST THATS WHAT THEY SAY):confused:

I have a similar problem on my lanes. I just pull out my dry lane ball and practice anyway. I mainly do it to be able to maintain a consistant shot. My scores are not that great but I practice anyway.
But then again, I just love to bowl! I would bowl on any condition available just to be able to bowl:cool:

THATS WHY I WANT BALL FOR LIGHTER OIL,PRACTICE YESTERDAY,NM BW, HOOKING LIKE CRAZY,TRIED TO PLAY TWIG,LOL(THREW COUPLE GUTTER BALLS,FOUND POCKET FEW TIMES,BY THEN 5TH GAME AND I WAS BURNT OUT AND FUSTRATED,TERRIBLE SCORE,HIGHEST 191,LOWEST 107,112,118,ETC................:mad: :confused: :mad:

Just be glad you get to use different conditions. The more types of conditions you get to bowl on the more diverse and better bowler you will become.
So grab a light oil ball or shine one up and rock it out!

I don't worry about my scores when I practice. When I practice, I am working on things like my release, ball speed, hitting my mark and picking up spares.
League conditions are typically the same each week. I am dramatically improving since I started practicing on a regular basis. I practice once to twice a week.

GET OUT OF HABIT OF TRYING TO GET GOOD SCORE AND WORK ON BASIC'S AND SPARES:cool:

I'm like you EIGHTBALL033, I go to practice with the intent to work on basics, but then I end up trying to shoot a good score. I find myself making all these adjustments, because like your house, the lane conditions are nowhere near league night. As grayfin68 does, I need to work on release, ball speed, hitting my mark, etc. The practice score doesn't count, but I guess pride takes over, especially if I'm bowling next to someone. Of course when the new synthetic lanes are installed in a couple weeks, I'll need to practice just to get used to them!

I'm not saying that I don't try to get a good score, but when you're working on things, the score becomes secondary.
I practiced on Saturday before New Year's Eve and bowled 4 games. I didn't have a single 200 game. I knew better not to get upset about it though. I ended up on league night (the following Tuesday), bowling a 647 series and started the night off with a 6 bagger.
The bottom line is that practice builds muscle memory through repetition, so if you're working on solid fundamentals, practice will help. It is also a confidence booster (if you don't focus on your score) because you know if you put the work in, you will get results.

A guy on my team just bought a BW and could no longer pick up 10 pins. He started using a spare ball (which I plan on doing as soon as I can find a cheap Tuff...I'm tired of beating the hell out of my BW going for 10 pins! :mad: ). He started practicing once or twice a week in order to get used to it. Instead of going for a strike on his 1st ball, he uses his spare ball and goes for the 10 pin. Then he uses his strike ball to pick up the rest. That's how he warms up before league play as well. I'm sure he'll go back to a conventional warm up after he builds his confidence with his spare ball, but this reverse practice and warm up has caused his 10 pin conversion percentage to go way up.

I don't blame anyone for getting a spare ball. You don't even have to buy a new ball (even though they're only around $50 or so at a shop). You can get a used ball at your shop on the cheap or even just polish up an old ball.
One of the benefits of using a spare ball for me is I don't have to change anything about my release. I also use it primarily only for spares on the right side of the lane.
It also saves wear and tear on your strike balls. I have had my PAIN for about three months and my TOXIC for two and neither ball has any nicks on them yet.

Yeah, I only plan on using a spare ball for 10s and 6-10s. The way I currently go for 10s works fine (flatten out the wrist and hand, throw thumb up with a little speed), but if I go a little too far right...ouch! I already have some nicks (after spending that much for my BW, they look like craters!). I'm just lucky that they're not in my track. I guess I'm being a little cheap looking for a used Tuff, when the price is only $50. If it saves my BW, it's worth the investment. :)

adverse lane conditions should not be a reason not to practice...in fact, it will make you a better bowler in the long run. Keep your eye on the prize, if you practice hitting your spots, shooting spares, maintaining your mecdhanics, it doesn't matter what you score in practice. Remember, any idiot can hit a house shot...but you have to know what you can do when that changes.
