How can you tell how fast you are throwing. I see alot of posts that mention mph, how did everyone get mph? Alot of people think they can throw a baseball faster than they actually can is this happening here?

In some houses speeds are posted for the ball as it hits the pins, some use radar guns showing speed as the ball travels down the alley and then gives you an avg. Its all done by the house that you bowl in. Its a nice feature if it works and is at least fairly accurate, from it you can tell if its u or the lanes making the changes. We have it on 10 of the 12 lanes in this old house, not very accurate and we only half way look at it...It a feature that is nice to have but not needed to be successful.

Another way to check ball speed is to have someone with a stop watch time your ball from when it crosses the foul line to the point of impact. Divide 40.909091 by the number of seconds. That'll give you your ball speed. For example, if my ball takes 3 seconds to hit the pins, I'd divide 40.909091 by 3. My ball speed would be approximately 13.6 mph. It's probably a good idea to do this several times in order to get an avgerage ball speed.

why divide by 40.909091? is this the length of the lanes?

Hey hammeredinkansas I believe that's divide by 40.909090824 ;) .
I thought we had this conversation before.
My speed around 17.8mph.

From a preveous post:
Speed = Distance / Time
The distance is 60 feet and 1 foot = 0.000189393939 miles so to get your ball speed in mph:
Speed = (0.000189393939 x 60 (feet)) (miles) / (your_time (sec) / (60 x 60))hours
Speed (miles/hour) = 40.909090824 / your_time (in seconds)

I asked the same MPH question as the fellow who started this thread. It's probably buried many pages back. One of our fellow Hammerheads must be a mathematical genius, because he explained how he came up with that number. I did it the long way (Speed = Distance/Time) and came up with the same answer I did when using 40.909091, so it works.

Yeah can-ham, we did have this convo before, but low and behold, it's come up again. I had to round your number to 40.909091 cuz that's all the space I have on my calculator. :o
Hey, at least I gave you mathematical genius status! :D

I guess that four year blur of drinking beer was good for something...

And at the time, we both probably said we'd never use math! :) Who knew that one day both beer drinking and math would help us become better bowlers! :D

:cool: LEAGUE HAS THEM ,IT HELPS SOME WHEN YOU SEE IT YOU KNOW IF U NEED TO SLOW DOWN OR SPEED UP,BUT YOU TELL THAT WITHOUT TOO BY EYE.

My center has the speed displayed as well. I like to see the differences in speed from bowler to bowler. I throw at around 15-16 and I throw right at 20 for my 10 pin spares and splits.

One thing I have noticed (bowling in different houses around Dead Moines), is that different centers show different speeds of the ball,,,,,I'm not talking .3 mph or any thing that small,,,,one center shows my ball speed (normal strike type velocity) @ 23.4 mph, another shows 14.6, another says 57.1, and then one is fairly accurate (I have done the math) at 18.2.
The whole point is,,,,,,,your' center might NOT have an accurate speed sensor. Which is my 1st thought when I see people posting ball speeds of 12-13-14 mph.
