I just have to say a big thank you to both Hammer and Faball for the arsenal of balls they've produced over the past few years, and how it helped me just last night.
First off, the following is in my bag:
Ebonite Optyx Formula 1 (oh, so pretty!)
Ebonite XXXcel
Black 3-D Offset Hammer
Hot Pink 3-D Offset Hammer (spare ball)
Urethane Blue Hammer (Old Faithful)
Urethane Blue Pearl Hammer (because I can. ;) )
I'm a stroker that can swing the ball, but I'm not afraid to square up and throw down and in. My game is mainly modeled after and influenced Brian Voss and the lady pros.
Last night comes up. Lanes were fairly wet at my house inside the 2nd arrows on both sides, with no mans land outside 5. Oil was laid down to about 25ft, buffed down to about 50, with the last 10 bone dry, so they're snapping unbelievably.
Pull out the XXXcel and start to swing with it. No joy. Ate up all its energy in the wet, and skidded.
Pulled out the Optyx. Went around the oil nicely, but snapped too hard. Looked pretty, but back it went.
Pulled out the Black 3-D offset. same results as the Optyx, but was more controllable. So I stayed with that. 232 the first game, though a couple of tripped 4s and 4-9s after making a 5 board adjustment left had me worried. 3-7-10 in the 10th had me putting the ball away.
Violet 3-D hooks more than the black one, and since I mainly throw that straight at 10 pins, I wasn't going to use it. So out I went to the car to pull out the Blue Hammer. She's drilled up with 3/8 sideweight, turned 90 degrees off its axis. Square up, send the ball straight up the 8 board and for the next 15 frames, I was locked, giving me my first 300 game in 11 years and my second sanctioned 300.
So thanks, Hammer and Faball, for putting together gear that I can always fall back on for the trusy B game that never lets me down.
I picked up on a tradition the lady pros have that when they shoot a 300, they never use that ball again (turns into a trophy). With this being done by a 18 year old urethane ball, I need to find another one to punch up to use! :p
Ebay, anyone? :)
