As most of you know I work as a porter at a bowling alley. Well this past week I was approached by the guy that runs the pro shop inside of the bowling alley I work at. He approached me about becoming his new ball driller. For a very long time I have wanted to learn how to drill stuff and work in a pro shop. At the same time I really love where I work and want to work my way up the company. In a perfect world I would love to work both places but I don't think I could do that. So my big problem is what should I do. I'm still 50/50 on what to do. I love what I have going at the bowling alley, I get along with my bosses and everyone I work with, but at the same time I really wanna be a ball driller. I've never been so torn on anything in my life before. So I just want to know, if you guys were in my shoes what would you do? Also any suggestions would be appreciated. One thing I will try to do is talk to the owner of the pro shop and see if there's anyway we could work something out where I can work both jobs.

If the shop is in your alley I dont see a reason you couldnt do both. One of the guys in town that is a driller also works for the alley. (I'd trust him if I wasnt going to my current guy as well, he's a good guy)
Still, if you have to choose, follow your dreams man.

you definately have some thinking to do Crusher. i would definately talk to all parties involved, mainly your current bosses and the pro shop guy that approached you about the job. i'm sure there is a compromise that can be reached for you to be able to do both jobs temporarily until you decide if the ball drilling thing is what you really want to do. you'll also have to think about the financial aspect of both jobs, and about the job security each may offer. whatever decision you make, at least you'll still be working in the same place and getting to see the same people you do right now. one other thing to consider, is the proshops relationship with the centers management; if it's a good one you should be able to work something out. good luck in your decision making process.

The pro shop and the alley do have a really good relationship. Like I said I will find out Monday if he decides to hire me for sure, and if he does I am going to talk with him and my current bosses to see if we can work something out to where I can work at both places.

My suggestion would be to see with the pro shop guy if you could work there on your off days and continue to do the alley job.

i say if you like what ur doing keep doing it but maybe see if you can work in the proshop part time maybe even only once or twice a week and then it would allow u to decide if u would rather drill balls or not bc ud still have the job on the lanes in ur back pocket

It's called moving up a rung on the bowling ladder of life. I take the pro shop gig without even thinking about it. A good driller can find work anywhere.

I agree 100% with Rowdy, take the pro shop job. Having the set of skills you will learn there will benefit you in the long term.

I think I'm leaning towards the pro shop a bit but idk. I have a close relationship with one of my bosses and I'm afraid that he'll be upset if I quit.

Our pro shop guy drills a lot in off hours. If you wanted to you could work nights maybe drilling, and days at your normal job, plus the pro shop guy might get extra business if he is closed during those times?

Understandable. Tell him you'll fill in on some of your days off if he needs you for awhile. Like three months or so. But you're gonna kick yourself in the butt if you don't take the pro shop gig. Trust me on this one.
Yeah,I know you don't know a thing about drilling balls. Yet. Neither did me or anyone else they're first day on the job. But I got in there and learned. And punched holes in old balls until I thought my arm was gonna fall off. And then had to punch out all the new balls the house bought. Like 552 of 'em! That's uh....let's see,552 times 3 is....hang on,I got shoes on here....1,656 holes!!! Jeez,no wonder I was so tired!!!
So,you'll learn to drill, polish, fill holes in and do all the other stuff that bowling balls need. They're not gonna hand you some guys brand new Jigsaw the first day on the job. And until you prove you can drill where and how the span sheet says someone will be there to check your work. Before you run the bit into the ball.
This kind of deal only comes along once in a lifetime. You pass on it now and it'll never come around again. Go for it.

The pro shop is open from noon to 8 on monday thru friday during the fall/winter. Open from 10 to 5 on saturdays and then closed on Sundays.
There was talk about me working 12 to 5 shifts but nothing was set in stone.

A good boss would never be upset with anyone attempting to improve themselves. Working in the shop is a considerable step up from a porters position.
I would be disappointed that i was losing a good employee, but I would be happy for the employee because of there advancement in the industry.

Looks like you made a good decision. Look at this way, this job was made for you. Now you get a discount on plugging/drilling and new equipment. So if we thought you where bad before, now watch out!

I was pretty much forced to give up on it. I was getting bad hip pain everytime I bowled to the point where I would have to stop bowling. So I figured since Im only 18, that if I kept doing it, it would keep consistently getting worse and worse. So I figured I would stop and start 1 handed, this was after 2 trips to the chiropractor that did nothing. I've been doing it a little over a month now, but I've only bowled like 5 times with it. I havent been bowling much at all, been fishing and golfing more than anything. After stopping 2 handed there is a lot less pain doing everything, and my golf swing has loosened up a ton since then.
