What line are you playing? What type of bowler are you (cranker, stroker, tweener)

cranker, and i play everywhere on the lane, i can bowl down 5 board or use all 35 boards on the lane.

I've never really heard of any methods to not leaving 10 pins. Seems to me like all bowlers leave them, often on what appear to be perfect shots. If you're leaving them on a consistent basis though, it may be the line you are playing or the angle of attack at the pocket.

There are alot of reasons for leaving a 10 pin, most are mechanical, some your equipment.

Equipment:
1. how old is your equipment and what weight
2. do you clean the oil off regularly
3. is your ball polished or sanded
4. drill pattern

Mechanics

If you can play up 5 or across 35, then you are able to change your speed and hand positions.
1. speed- too fast for your revs (ball skids a little to far at your break point)
2. hook- too much hook and ball rolls out at the pocket or ball rolls too early in the heads (typical for drier conditions or covering too many boards)
3. timing- pulling a shot through at the line reduces leverage at release making the ball hit weaker
4. lane play- playing in an area of too much oil for your style; ball skids too long

This is just a start to many of the typical things I have found coaching bowlers. Do you have a video?

This is an old trick from one of our senior members at my house. He says if you constantly leave the ten, take a small step either back or forward on the approach, and throw your same line. Sounds too easy, but it works....

ok
1. Equipment is what you see below, plus a black ice
2. I deoil my gear about once every single 2 weeks and clean them once a week but i wipe my bowling balls after everysingles frame
3. Its all my gear that is leaving tenpins
4. i have 2 stacked drillings, 1 45 degress pin under ring finger, 2 leverage and 1 unders under pin cg in palm, 1 Neg drill(black ice) with side weight

u r correct about the hand positions and everything

1. i dnt bowl that fast, but i have alot of revs
2. covering alot of boards and into the pocket is 1 of the problems i have at leaving tenpins
3. my coach said my timing is perfect mostly all the time
4. i play on dry and oily lanes all the time and leaving tenpins on both conoditions

and last but not least videos!

they r all around 1 yr old

streetracer...I'll throw my thoughts, but lets see what BBjunior08 has to say also. watching the videos on semi dry you seemed to be finishing nicely, the thing I'm wonder if its a 10 pin during leagues because of the ball sliding too much and going pass its breakpoint. Usually a 10pin is because the ball hit in back of the head pin. I have a feeling that the 10 pins you are experiencing might come just from that fact, so to make the ball finish a little more a move backward on the approach might be worth a shot. I would say for you to slide back about 6inches on the approach, using the same lines and marks as before. Now, I'm not a professional coach, but thats my thoughts....good luck

I too am a power player, but I have the advantage of running a pro shop and trying some different things...I would assume that if you're able to turn the ball that much, you don't track super high on the ball... A drilling layout that I like to use for myself, that seems to carry the corners a little better is: Use a ball that has 2-3" pin (this layout works really well on the ice!) place the pin below the ring finger, and set the pin to the left (that's right, I said the left) of the midline about 1/2" and around the center of grip. This layout should require no extra holes, and believe me, it will not burn up in oil, and will not stop hooking...you may have little more tendency to leave 9's, which all crankers do...but you should deffinitely see a decrease in 10's.

Move the direction of the pin. If you adjusted left and are not getting to the pocket, move back. If you have been strike or just basically on target... I move forward. But this is usually followed by a move left.

Hope this helps.

StreetRacer,

Too bad your videos didn't show the 10 pin issue. However, the key to your solution is in adjusting for oil vs dry conditions. The dry conditions seem to let you roll the ball smoothly and picks up good.

If you typically play that deep on a fresh oil condition, you are going to be sensitive to 10 pins. You may want to try: 1) play the same line but take a little speed off your release (if you can) so that the ball will read the lanes as it exits the oil. This may force you to move your target just a little right, but will give a better entry to the pins. 2) alter the surface of one of your balls (go down 1 or 2 steps in grit) to try to get the ball to pickup better in the mid lane.

Question: do you think that you are trying to lift a little extra knowing that you think you need it to carry the 10 pin (this will sometimes add a little of speed too which can cause a problem).

went bowling yesterday for practice and I was leaving 7's (lefty) all over the place. My last game I hade 6 in a row!! I would adjust lines, approach and standing point but the S.O.B! just wouldnt fall. I picked up everyone with my urethane but damn was it frustrating b/c the ball would roll right up into the pocket and BAM!!! 7 pin. ugh. Good practice shooting at them though.;)
