View Full Version : Coping with being a Robby Revver

So I have had trouble lately. My house change the shot and the volume is low which causes any ball I use (besides the Razyr) will roll out. This has a lot to do with the fact that I have a high track and I have been really up the back of the ball lately.
This also has a lot to do with the fact that I have a weak wrist and will break it in my backswing. I knew these things but before my house had the volume so the core didn't stand up too quickly.
I used to use a Robby Rev's III when I started bowling and put it away thinking it was hindering me. For along time I was successful without it to. Today I practiced with the wrist support and couldn't believe the difference. After a few "getting comfortable" balls I could see how much my axis, tilt, and even my speed went up went because of the extra support. I really noticed the way my Burn swirled and where the axis hole was and where it was.
Every ball continued and ripped the rack in half, evel went through a few and left some nines.
I am not saying that everyone can or should rely on something like this. But if the only problem you are having is due to a weak wrist and you don't have the time to work it out and you can trust it without grabbing, you can see some positive results.
I understand the vehemence and the idea that the wrist brace is an inhibitor however, in my own experience I have seen an increase in everything it takes for me to cope with my house. Don't knock it until you try it, of course.

I use what's called a Deluxe Wrist Glove from Master Industries as I had the same issue with my wrist breaking back and not being able to keep it where i wanted it through the release. Everybody has their opinions on all the devices people use and the only thing i can say is use what works for you. if you bowl better with a wrist device, then by all means use it.

Screw the all mighty puritan's and in their bowling bible's how they preach chapter 3:16 says: "A real bowler doesn't use any form of aid to further improve one's bowling skill or technigue, and your using a crutch".
If your comfortable using a wrist brace and are enjoying bowling more because you see an improvement not only in your game but confidence as well, then that's all that matters in the long run.

glad to hear some support :D
I just couldn't believe the difference in the Burn's behavior.. I can't wait to test out my Acids, my Hot Sauce Pearl, and maybe even my No Mercy... I see awesomeness ahead
I just really think that my understanding of the physical game and my experience allowed me to use this tool with little adjustment and I actually look better doing it.

Hey, I keep an original Robby's in the bag. There are still times it still comes in handy.

+1
I've always kept my original Robby's in my bag, and that's going back to '88. The same one for the past 21 years. It generally comes in handy for me when I brainfart and suitcase the ball at the release. It keeps my hand position exactly where I need it.
The other reason I wear it is to protect my wrist and forearm from injury. People can call it a crutch all they want; but 30 years from now, I'll still have the wrist and motion, where they might be dealing with shoulder surgery and torn rotator cuffs. Has anyone noticed the amount of wristbands and the like being used on the Senior Tour (and at least going back to the late 80s/early 90s)? The only ones I could remember seeing without one on were Gene Stus, Petraglia, and nowadays, Aulby, Voss, and Ozio. Eagle wears one, Roth wore one. Handegard, Salvino, Teata Semitz, Dickinson, Carter, Anthony...
IMHO, those calling it a crutch may have some validity, but when thinking long term, it's more about the longevity of your ability to bowl more than anything. I've used a Cobra before, and that's the farthest I would want to go. if I have to use any wrist support, I'd do nothing more than the original Robby's.

What I hate the most is how some lameass jabroni puts down all my hard work that I put into changing my approach, how I hold the ball, release of the ball, and being consistant with my arm swing in order to hit my mark, and they want to say that it's the damn mongoose wristbrace that has done it for me.
Forget all those hours of practice and understanding the lanes alot better than I did when I first got into being a league bowler, granted I had alot of help from the great people of K&K bowling and they was nice enough to answer any stupid question I may have had.
I do know that I went from a 121 average from my first league to a 155 after my last league, and I have gone up each season in between, with the goal of being a 160-170 average bowler overall. So far this season I'm at a 175 average, and I've had a few "purist's" complain about my wristbrace.
But the messed up thing about these jabroni's is when you look on the wall of people who have had the 300 games and the high series, you will see these same jabroni cry babies in there with a wrist brace on in the picture.
If I have to go to bowling hell just because I use a wrist brace and I'm comfortable in it and it allows me to not only have fun and helps improve my confidence in my overall game, then give me a first class ticket and tell satan I'm coming to take over my new home.

well pretty much an update on my experience,
first league night using it I go 197 (no consistancy the first game), 235, 259 (go Razyr) for one of my highest series yet.
I did notice that I have consistancy problems with my release which doesn't bug me as much as I thought it would. This Sunday I was practicing and couldn't get anything going so I decided to take off the brace. I actually was underneath the ball much more and got a lot of continuation through the pocket. Although it isn't one hundred percent perfection, my co-worker agreed that I was under the ball much longer.
So for all intents and purposes, I suppose I am using the Robby as a "training" device for my wrist in practice and I'm going to try without it during league this week. Obviously, if I am doing terrible and am reverting back to my old habits in league-practice I will toss the device back on. I would much prefer not to have it on if I don't have to. Will update after Friday.

I end up posting this in all of these threads, but I figure I'll say it again:
IMO, you should use whatever helps you knock down the most pins. While I might rib someone that I'm friendly with about using one, it doesn't bother me as long as it's within the rules agreed upon for the league. I've tried a wrist brace and it didn't help my game, so I don't use one. But if I hurt my wrist and I had to use one or not bowl again, I would buy the biggest/best one on the market.
Hell, if I could average 230 rolling the ball granny style, I would proudly walk up to the line and granny-it-up.
