I got into a disscusion with someone in my league about the 10th frame. He was trying to tell me that if you went x9- in the tenth with no other opens that it was a clean game.Im almost positive that it would have to be x9/ or else it was considered an open therefore not a clean game.He even told me that people had claimed clean series like that but i find it hard to believe.Does anybody know for sure who is right?

I don't know the answer either, I'm glad you asked. A friend of mine swears the fill ball in the 10th doesn't count towards a clean game. It just feels wrong to me. Even though that means the only possibility to throw a clean game if you open the 10th with a double mean you have to strike, I just don't see how you can say it's a clean game seeing XX8 in the 10th...just looks wrong..:)

You're right,he's wrong. If you use his logic going XXXXXXXXXXX- for a 270 would be a clean game. Try getting that one past us.

you only need to either strike on the first ball of the tenth or convert the spare, the fill ball is not a factor in a clean game or series. a game is ten frames, not eleven or twelve; therefore a spare or strike in the tenth would be ok. I do agree with you it looks weird when you don't fill the tenth but it's still a clean game if you have marks in the first ten frames.
your friend is right Redman, a X 9- in the tenth, with no opens in the first 9 frames IS considered a clean game per USBC rules.

Rowdy, unless my math is incorrect, 11 strikes in a row and a gutterball is a 290 not a 270...and is a clean game according to USBC rules...sorry.

My bad,I suck at math sometimes. Chalk it up to having a blonde moment.
But still, whiffing the last ball and claiming a clean game. Really??? I know "legally" it would be clean....but you would have to have a very low opinion of yourself to brag on that "feat". And you know everytime you opened your yap about going clean like that all your team mates would be snickering behind your back about it.

I think its a clean game when you mark 10 times but that is just imho I don't own a rule book to look it up.

This is one that has been debated for years. Some say you do not need a strike on the fill ball or 3X'x in the 10th and some say you do need a mark on the fill ball or 3X's in the 10th frame. The only defenition there is about a clean game is "A game without any open frames."
That means to me that every frame has to have a spare of strike including the tenth. If a person goes 8 / in the tenth there is still one more shot in the 10th to make. I see it as it must be a strike to be a clean game.

In my opinion its not a clean game. If you went XXXXXXXXXX9- then that is not a clean game, you have a frame that you opened in. You missed a spare in the 10th frame, therefore you were not clean because you had an open. If you got XXXXXXXXXXX9 then that is fine, you didnt have a chance to shoot at your spare, so you didnt miss it, clean game. Any missed spares or opens in the game whether it be in the 1st frame or the 11th shot, shouldnt be considered a clean game.

It just hard for me to understand that even if you go X9 and miss the single pin to spare it up in the 10 frame that it would still be a clean game. The 10th frame is different than any other in that you can get up to 2 to 3 marks in it,so only getting the first x then not sparing up your next ball and still calling it a clean frame doesnt make sense to me.Obviously going xx9 or 9/9 i consider clean but x9-,really?

Screw it how about the one you all forgot about. You guys are hung up on the single spare gutter or whiff.
Here is what you forgot
XXXXXXXXXX--
USBC Rules: state that any Ten Marks qualifies as a clean game.
Sure three strike's or two mark's looks better.

Uh huh. And 10 in a row with two whiffs is a clean game. Legally. Would yours truly claim it??? Hell no.

So...it would be a 'USBC' clean game, but not a "real" clean game, I guess.
I wouldn't claim it either. I'd hang my head in shame If I shot 10 in a row and threw a couple in the drink. :(

Tinkerbell would have it inscribed on my headstone..."Here lies the doofus that had 10 strikes in a row and then pumped two, count 'em,TWO balls in the ditch to gag on it."
Or something close to that.....

Hehe if you can only get 10 opens in a game, then ten marks must be clean.
I love this debate because I always strive to pick up may spares, even if they are fill balls. But if I can get 30 non-open frames in a series (or 40 in my 4 game league) then I'll be happy! :D

Ah clean games... I still remember when I went my 75+ frames of being clean earlier in the year in leagues... Pocket 5 - 7 broke the streak... Hooray for the ball falling off my hand lol.

I consider a clean game being every chance you have at a spare, you convert. If you go XX9 through the 10th, I consider that clean because you don't shoot at the spare so you don't miss it. X9- in the 10th would make it a non-clean game in my eyes.

Last night I rolled an 11 strike game that was unclean for a 267 (ringing 10 in the 8th and poor spare shooting).
But really guys if you've got the front 10, you're debating the difference between a clean game and a perfect game. At that point there are no open frames, and any thing less than perfect game is just disapointing (in varying levels :D).

Granted it was practice, but.....
X 9/ 9/ X 7/ X X X X X 63 - 234
Tugged it after that last strike. Grrrrrrr. Still a respectable outing.
