I recently started bowling after being out of it for almost 10 years. Hammer is still getting the High Scores, I see.
Anyway, I am looking for a new ball for big hook on some odd lanes. They don't take care of them, so there is about 55 feet of medium oil and the first 10 feet of lane have moon craters.
I was thinking of black widow for it's strong hook. Is there a better ball for this(not the no mercy)? What drilling? I hear the strong layout isn't as good for this as it should be. maybe a skid/flip, I hear good things about that.
would a skid flip go too far on these lanes? end up hooking in the parking lot.

Well the widow is a great hooking ball...but i think the Toxic is a better skid flip roll ball....the toxic has a great backend reaction and sometimes...it might even hook more than the widow giving the correct lane conditions lol anyhow Toxic is a beast...

If your house really has 55 feet of oil, there isnt enough time for the ball to find any friction. You need something that will pick up its roll very soon and not rely on dry lane to hook. I would suggest a Pain or Hawgzilla drilled to roll sooner than later.

By medium oil what do you mean? What ball are you currently using and how is it hooking on this pattern? What do the lanes feel like as series progresses?
I play on normal house shot pattern. With probably medium oil to 42 feet, from 8 board. to 8 board. I start with BW playing between 10 and 15 board. When BW hooks too much or lanes get squirelly I change balls and go with stronger NM and move left in search of fresher oil. I find that NM carries better for me when I play inside of 15 board.
I also have Toxic drilled almost identically to my #2 drilling BW. They are similar in overall hook. I think the BW gives me better results.

With the info. that you provided my best guess would be that you try a BW or a Hawgzilla.. I have seen both and used both and from your description I say that those would be your best choices.. Or consider changing houses??

Thanks for the fast replies!!
by medium oil, I mean that it leaves large oil rings on my ball, but it isn't too sloppy. and I have no idea exactly what the lane is oiled to, but when they run the machine, it doesn't stop applying oil until the front of it hits the head pin (machine is about 5 feet long, 60 feet to head pin, about 55 feet of oil, no?). the sides are pretty dry so something that can use that is a plus.
I am using an old school urethane ball right now sanded to like, 800. it hooks about 2-3 boards if I really spin it. My sister just got a pain, and she hates iton these lanes, and the toxics just don't have that exploding hit that I like in my balls.
The other alley near me is even worse. slimy dirty oil. broken pinsetters. :shiver:
I don't know anyone who bowls the hawg lineup. aren't they for really heavy oil? I'll go give them a glance.

Most if not all lane machines lay down oil, conditioner, etc according to a specific program loaded into it. When you hear about shark, cheetah, pba patterns, that is what they are talking about. Most houses lay down a typical house pattern geared towards the average bowler. Helps bring outside shots in, helps pulled shots hold the line.
Our house will sometimes prints up a graph that shows how the oil was layed out, buffing, blending, reverse buff, etc.
Hope this helps
