View Full Version : Disappointed with Black Widow

I purchased a Black Widow (15#) and had it drilled with the skid/flip layout. The problem is the ball will not hook hardly at all even in very light oil. I am releasing properly because you can see the revs on the ball but it just doesn't hook like advertised. Any suggestions?

What sort of weight has it got...?? The other thing I have noticed is you see a big difference with the Widow when you change shot speed.

Hmmm... would sure love to see you throw the ball. You are the first person I've heard of that didn't like it. And yes it's a very speed sensitive ball. Try throwing down and in, I'm now throwing it between 1st and 2nd arrow. I throw about 16.5 mph (if the radar thing is correct) Very static on the wrist. When I release the ball my thumb is approx. the 2 o'clock position.

good luck keep us informed

BW is my favorite ball ever. If yours is not hooking with your skid flip drilling I would recommend taking the cover down to 1000!

Actually, you could go down to lower and gradually play with coverstock until you get response you want.

Can someone answer for me what the difference is between wet and dry changes to cover of the ball.

I think it might be a drilling problem. The oob cover on my widow hooks a ton, and mine is drilled with the all purpose layout. I did notice that the hook increased in mine after I got some oil on it. The best advice I could give you is have a trusted pro shop check out how the ball is reacting on the lanes and make a recommendation to you then. All we can do is speculate about solutions...

does the widow have to track in before it attains full potential?

Wow,,,, Never heard of a Widow not hooking (except on the Exxon Valdez oil slick). Mine is drilled skid/flip and I throw down & in off of the outside arrow @ 18- 18.5 mph and it comes screaming back to the pocket.
What distance is the pin from the CG? Mine is 5" and I feel it's perfect.

An update.......the ball was possibly drilled wrong. It was plugged and redrilled and I'll pick it up this afternoon. There are only 3 pro shops in the area.....I've been to all 3 and got different drilling advice from all of them. I hope this solves the problem. If not, the ball will hit "file 13". I'll keep you posted.

Is there an echo in here?

Good advice. Wipe the ball, stick to the routine.

It WAS a drilling problem. I picked up the ball and the proshop had the ball redrilled and altered the surface a bit. It hooks better now....I rolled a 189, 227, 252 in practice. Hope the trend continues.
