lanes?

does anyone know what kind of wood lanes are actually made out of i know that they have a synthetic cover but what kind of wood if used and what kind of water based finish (if thats what it is) is used to make the lanes as lovely as they are today

I believe with old wood lanes, the heads (upto just past the arrows) are maple, for their hardness and then pine... not sure what the pin decks are but I'd say that they'd be a harder wood too. Don't quote me as I'm not 100% sure...
