TOXIC, HOW DO YOU HAVE DRILLED AND HOW DOES BALL RESPOND?  REASON ASKING I BOWL ON WOOD AND ON AVERAGE NITE LANES ARE MED TO HEAVY, BUT BREAKDOWN QUICK,WONDERING HOW I SHOULD DRILL,IM STROKER/TWEENER,15 TO 17 MPH,AND I LIKE TO TRY DIFFERENT LINES ACCORDING TO LANES,ANY SUGGESTIONS WELCOME

My Toxic has a 3" pin and 3oz of top weight... the pin is right between the ring and middle fingers... about 3/4" up... the CG is directly below it in line with the pin and the thumb hole. Currently, the ball is not giving me much response at all ( just a slight hook in at the end... not much to write home about though)... I have to stand all the way out in right field and really crank it to get any response out of it, and I am a stroker, so this is unnatural to me... unless the lanes are dried up I get very little. Im seriously contemplating having a redrill done to a better layout. Luckily, it still hits like a hammer and has excellent control for making the exhaustinve number of 7 pin spares Ive been leaving.

I would go with something like a 4-1/2 inch pin to PAP distance but keep the pin low...this will allow the ball to be a little smoother, and not so erratic at the breakpoint. If it would still be a little to erratic, or go to long, you could hit the surface with some abralon...

just my 2 Cents :)

Im a Righty, but Im getting so little response from it that I hit deep in the pocket almost everytime anymore... Also, if I adjust to hit square on, I leave the 10 often. Like I said, with it going with such little break, it makes a great spare ball for me. I really need a change with it or my swing. However, I throw my roommates black widow and get great response out of it. Thats why this is so frustrating. I "Asked the Expert" on the Hammer site, and he said to try some 1000g before I redrill. So your Abralon suggestion is appreciated and probably my next step Bar5003:D

I'm also a stroker/tweener but I bowl on synthetic. My layout is High RG-Medium layout. Pin is to the right of ring finger and a little below. I'd ask my ball driller what is best for you though. That's what I did and the ball works great for what I use it for (medium oil).

The ball goes pretty straight through the heads and breaks hard at the pocket, but as the lanes dry out, I need to throw harder to keep it in the pocket or switch to the Vibe.

What kind of pin length, top weight, and CG placement do you have? Just curious because the more I look at layouts that do what I want... the more I realize that I should have spoken up about the standard layout that the pro shop guy drilled. I went in and was measured, expected to be asked more about my stroke and style, but it was drilled by the time I went back in and I figured it was me not doing something right instead of a difficult layout of the ball. I must admit naivety on my part though for not knowing better. Im new to the high performance ball world.

My pin is 3-4" and top weight is 2-3 oz, I think. I think for the most part, when you're just getting started (as I was with the Pain), most pros will recommend one of the standard layouts to match your style of game.

Sometimes just telling him (provided you describe your style accurately) will be enough information, but if he can actually watch you bowl, it gives him that much more information on your style and what drillings might work best for you.

I think the custom drillings are for the more experienced players who like to experiment and can afford to buy new balls all the time.

I dont really want to get into anything too far out there, but currently my High RG-Length layout with a longish pin, low flare, and 3oz top weight just arent doing a thing for me. I was kind of thinking about just having it changed to the High RG medium pattern, so as to get more out of the medium amount of Revs I put on as a stroker.

I'd go to my ball driller, tell him what I want the ball to do in reference to my style and see what he recommends. It's difficult to recommend stuff on a forum when you can't see the person bowl. Plus, I'm far from an expert anyway. Good luck with finding the right drilling for your style.

I just read an article on that bowl4fun website and he even suggested for a guy my size to possible consider dropping to a 14 pound ball... that would have been nice to consider before I bought it, but Im far froma rich college student and I dont think Ill be replacing the Toxic any time soon. I will consider it though if I get a Black Widow. Thanks for all of your help.

Yo Mr8ball:

I got my Toxic ball drilled based upon some recommendations I received here a while back. Actually, the ball is drilled just like my Black Widow #2 all purpose drilling.

Pin is between and below fingers toward thumb about 1/2 inch. CG is kicked out at about 45 degrees. The pin is a little shorter than I like (only ~2 inches) -- I like it to be 3-4 inches. I am not sure I can tell the difference, I just like the longer pin from CG.

I think the way that Grayfin has it drilled would be too much for use after lanes start to break down (IMO). I would love GF's drilling but would use that ball over my Black Widow because it would be stronger than my Black Widow drilling.

I am truly into my Toxic right now and have considered doubling up on Black Widow and Toxic to have 4 looks with my favorite balls. If I got a second Toxic I would have it drilled up like Grayfin's. When I get second Black Widow I will get it drilled strong so I can play the inside.

Caveat: You know I am no expert. Just my experience.

With pin below fingers the ball is not going to go too long before reading the lanes and starting the hook. I do not like waiting to the last minute to see my ball make its move.

This is the all purpose drilling on the BW. Basically depending on how I do my "finger dancing" from Bowl4fun.com I can play anywhere from up the 5 board to pretty far inside. My stroker "A game" with this ball is feet at 22-25 and shooting up 10-13 at the arrows. I keep up the speed and the ball hits the pins and they fall down. I can hook it more, but I try to tame the hook a little by keeping pinkie up against ring finger and index out away from fingers.
