Ok so I mentioned yesterday that our good friend Eightball033 had been extra generous and mailed me a couple of the Magic Carpets. And I got them in time to use for the last night of my league last night. I also noted that I was going to go at lunch yesterday and throw a couple practice games to get used to it. I was unable to do so, and my series struggled because of it...

On to the review. For those who don't know what the magic carpet is, it is basically a little piece of loop pile carpet with an adhesive back (think the "soft" side of velcro, which btw I am going to try) that you put on the knuckle side of your thumb hole to give that little extra bit of snugness yet allowing the thumb to slide in and out easily due to the give of the material.
http://www.bowl4fun.com/magiccarpet/magiccarpet.htm

Immediately in practice I noticed a drastic change in all facets of my shot. I have always been a low speed low revs stroker, and with the magic carpet I picked up considerable speed, and a very noticeable increase in revs. I had never known it before, but my equipment never fit my hand properly, even though I thought it did.

That said, I was almost learning how to bowl all over again. My line was no where near my normal shot. By the time I figured it out, I was able to stand about the 30-35 board, get the ball out anwhere between 5 and 15 and just crush the pocket. Where as my old shot would have been to stand much further right and just kind of pump it down and in.

It took me a while to get used to it though, that is for sure. The first game was a PATHETIC 122. I was sick to my stomach. I was trying to figure out my strike shot, and in the mean time missing spares all over the place, because my spare ball was now unthrowable because it didn't fit right!

Got things a little more together 2nd game and chucked a 179. Not great, but much better than the turd 1st game. End of the 2nd game things were really starting to feel good.

Third game...sigh...bliss. Absolutely smoked the front four. Perfect pocket shots with this beautiful arc. 10 in the pit every time. 5th frame stuck a little on approach missed my mark, ball looks like its headed for the head pin and a nasty split, makes a nice movement at the last second and strikes brooklyn. Whew... ok so calm down, try not to think about sticking, try not to think about sticking... What do I do in the 6th...think about sticking...almost fall down  however the ball is making a hard turn and looks like an easy brookie strike unlike the last one that seemed lucky... SOLID 5 pin. Damn... ok pick up the 5. Calm way down. 7th, perfect. 8th perfect. 9th perfect. 10th first ball PERFECT!!! Holy CRAP! I am throwing the game of my life... STOP THINKING ABOUT IT YOU MORON!! CALM DOWN JACKASS OR YOU WILL SCREW THIS UP.

Could not do it to save my life. I was about to piss myself...lol. Threw a decent ball, not perfect like all the rest, but seemingly good enough to get some pin count... hit a little light...took 6...left some junk like 2-4-7-8 or some crap...I felt let down...grabbed my spare ballk, and immediately got a bad feeling. It did not feel good on my hand at all, so I say ok use the Diesel, but make sure you get the sleeper, open your hand a bit, throw it straight thru all of those bastards and lets go home with a hell of a game.

Overthought it way way too much, ended up pretty much blasting it straight down the center of the lane, missing everything to the right to end up with a 261.:o Not great, could have been better, but it is my high game of the season, maybe career...

Most people would think it rediculous to say it had much to do with the magic carpet, but I really think it did. As I have said before here, I have a LOT of trouble being consistent with my strike shot. I know now that had more to do with my grip and release than I ever knew.

Hey BSH, I have visited the magic carpet site and read that when you first use the carpet you may experience some redness and junk on your thumb knuckle. Did you have any effects like that while or after you used it? I would like to try this as I am spending $$ on black and white tape as I end up changing a time or two a night. Thanks.

Yep red as hell. Didn't hurt or anything, but it sure did turn it red. Its just the abrasiveness of the carpet...no biggie. On the positive side, my thumb knuckle is now velvety smooth, and oh so soft! Lol...I keed I keed...:D

Good news and bad news.

1. The good news is that I received my tape and used it in my balls. Fortunately, I had my thumb holes drilled a little bigger than I needed to to allow for tape, so by taking out all of the bowling tape, I had just enough room for the magic carpet tape.

The stuff works great and keeps my thumb nice and snug, while allowing for a proper release.

2. The bad news. It wore a layer of skin off of my thumb. Granted, practicing six games with a new product may have not been the brightest idea, but that's how I practice. I also bowl back to back on Tuesday nights, so that's why I practice six game sets.

Anyway, it's nothing that some NuSkin can't fix!

I tried the Ron's Magic Carpet a few months ago (in January). I did not have thumbhole opened up first and should have. I bowled ok but it messed my thumb up so bad it has taken 2 months to get better. Red thumb ... tore up thumb ... bloody thumb .... maybe slight exaggeration. I would try it again now that my thumb has healed some. But, make sure there is enough room because it is like 5 pieces or more of white tape.

I can say that until the excruciating pain from red/tore up thumb that I did like the soft feet of the velcrow loops on my poor thumb.:o Was only able to use it for one game (prbly bowled about 205). The Callous that had developed on my thumb got lopped off by the friction with the "magic carpet".

I think that my mistake was that I did not wear my usual red vise tape to protect my thumb. If the hole was bigger and I wore the protective tape, I bet over time my thumb would have been fine and not traumatized like it was.

Interesting. I know you were half kidding, but not completely. I do think that this might not be for some people. But that it will work fantastically for others...me being one!;)

I think it would have worked for me too. I just needed bigger thumbhole. Basically, callous that took 16 months to develop came off in one night with the assistance of friction from smooth magic carpet.

Is that a good or bad thing. I don't know, i don't get callouses.

If you are ripping your thumb aparting using the tape thats means your thumb hole is just that little bit too small.....(but everybody has prob figured out that by now)...... and its easy to fix up.

I use the Turbo 2n1 tape, to protect the lumb i have on my thumb or it will just rip open.

This Magic Carpet sounds good and well i'm still sticking with the turbo 2n1 tape

My thumb hole where opened up with a drill bit and sander. Think part of the problem was no room for white tape to adjust size. However I did bowl around 20+ games in a week. At the time was bowling 6-9 game on a avergae week. Took the carpet out and bowled a 278, the next day.

That's how they look out of the box, more blue-ish than black. I guess they turn solid black once they start to suck up oil. Too bad it's looks pretty mean right now.

Last night I had to bowl with a scab on my right thumb that was created by Ron C's Magic Carpet Tape.

Fortunately, I bought a bottle of New Skin prior to bowling and I only had to bowl one shift last night.

The tape works great for keeping my thumb snug and being able to have a consistent release. I rolled two 200 games last night and was back on track.

The New Skin worked great until the third game in which I noticed that it was starting to wear off some. So, I added another layer, but I didn't have enough time to let it dry.

So, within two or three balls, it ripped off and my scab started bleeding. So, I used a band aid instead and it held up for the rest of the game and finished with a 213. However, once I put the bandaid on, I stopped throwing strikes and converted all of my spares.

Anyway, I'm going to keep using it, but I'm going to use the New Skin as a preventative to ripping my thumb open and see how that works once this one heals.

I am not a hammerhead but I read this article last night. I had some velcro and decided to try it. It sure made the ball fit my thumbs, both right and left. I did have some redness on the back of my right thumb,on my left so slight it was hard to see. The velcro sure made it easy to swing the ball without squeezing period. The snug thumb sure made it easier to be consistant. My right hand scores were 176,224,191. I am usually more humpty dumpty. My left hand scores were 174,194,181,179. I believe that the reason that my right thumb was so red was that the velcro was comming loose and I didn't have it in the right place. I think that I have already fixed the problem. I would recommend the magic carpet/velcro to any one that has a thumb hole that is too big. It sure worked for me.

:D I don't think Ron C. appreciated it when I emailed him and told him that while his product works, it ripped a hole in my thumb and also said that it was basically over-priced, one-sided velcro.

I'm still waiting for a response.

Wicked funny.

I wanted to share a couple of observations and apply for a job. It has come to my attention that your product sells for $3.00 a yard at Michaels Arts and Crafts Store. My teammates tell me that your product works all right once the rash disappears and the throbbing slows down! Are you accepting resumes? Because I would like to be in charge of cutting the "magic carpets" of the spool of velcrow!:o
