View Full Version : Bowling style and layout question.

OK, having bought three balls out of the latest line of Hammers, I decided to venture outside of Hammer for a new ball.
I wanted something for heavy oil, so I read a lot of reviews and got a great Ebay deal on a Rotogrip Epic Battle.
This ball has a pro pin, which is a bonus for exotic drillings (from what I think I understand).
Anyway, I'm thinking about going for the layout that is recommended for heavy oil. It has an early front end reaction with a steady, predictable back end motion according to the sheet.
On the back, there are also instructions for a "full roller". First question is what exactly is a full roller?
I noticed that the layouts for the full roller have the track passing between the thumb and finger holes on a diagonal line.
What is the purpose for wanting the track to roll right between the finger and thumb holes?
Seems to me that the flare would cause the ball to roll over the holes some.
A full rollers release creates a track in between the fingers and thumb. I don't know much about Roto's cores so I can't help with layout ideas.
Good luck with the ball.
EDIT:
Before someone else asks, do you know your pap?

Hard to say about layout without watching you bowl, have your local pro watch you, check your track, and suggest to him what you want, and you should be set. Let us know how it roll for ya.

Slap, thanks for the response! Well, that would mean that I'm not a full roller, so I can eliminate that option.
I don't know my PAP, but My other balls are all drilled similarly with High RG - Medium layout. My PAIN and Toxic are drilled the same and my Blue Vibe has the CG lower for length.
I'm leaning towards the layout that gives me the most overall hook that is for heavy oil since that's what I bought the ball for.
My pro knows my style and basically tells me that I should stick to standard layouts based on what I want the ball to do. In other words, if I want a ball for medium oil, pick the layout that the company recommends for my style of bowling.
I've had pretty good success with the other balls that he's drilled for me, so I trust his judgement.
This summer, I'm joining a PBA experience league and I need a ball for the Shark pattern and I'm hoping the Epic Battle will be the ball. Either that or the PAIN.

That's always good advice, but I already told the pro which ball I ordered, and he suggested that I pick a standard layout based on what I want the ball to do.
I'm a low tracker because I tend to get more sideways rotation than I probably should.

I also like to do research before I go to the shop. That way we can have a two way discussion about the drilling versus a one way conversation. My driller is also a coach and he encourages this among serious bowlers, both the higher average guys and those of us striving to get there.
My NM is a perfect example. He initially recommended the #2 drilling but from my research I was leaning towards the #8. I also have a low-ish track, we remeasured my PAP for the NM and it's 4 1/8 inch over 7/8 up. He explained to me the different reactions I would see with each drilling and also the limitations because the Hart was misaligned. I ended up with a modified #8. So far I'm loving the ball, first night out I shot 158 194 200 208, slightly over my current 182 avg.

Okay, I'm bored so I pulled up the Epic drill sheet...lol
From my beginners understanding of layouts, for a heavy oil ball you want the ball rev early and have a strong read of the midlane. (like the NM)
The layout that caught my eye for what you're looking is letter D, 3 inch PIN to PAP. Which one were you thinking about?
I wonder how that pro pin ball will limit your options? I picked up a X-out Awesome Revs for short money. The pin was pretty long, 5 inches so I was limited to a pin above the bridge drilling. That wasn't a bad option because I wanted an aggressive med-heavy ball. He started drawing lines and I ended up with a flip drilling that wasn't on the drill sheet. The Pin is 1 inch from my axis line and 4 inches from my PAP with the MB 90 degrees at the front of the thumb.
Wait this is your thread, sorry for the hijack....keep us informed!

The 3" from PAP drilling is what I am leaning towards. My pro will have me bring another ball in to determine my PAP. He's drilled all of my recent hammers and knows my style from bowling in league with me and also from watching me during a lesson. He thinks that I should stick to standard layouts for now.

Nice pics of you and Billy "O". And also, that's a bad-ass looking No Mercy.
I'm starting to get comfortable with changes he suggested. I'm much lower at the line and I've cut down on the loft, my ball is rolling a lot smoother with more power. Very nice

Slap, Sweet spinner and set up!
If I had that I think I'd have a new surface every week!

Thanks!
Once you're ready to buy a new ball hold off and get a spinner instead. You won't regret it...
Bump for an update on the Epic, Grayfin...
