Pin over the ring vs below or to the side gives you more length, seriously spreading the finger helps make it easier to get revs, you need to find a combination of ball speed and revs that works for you and the conditions you are on.

Double check this at Bowl4fun however, this is what I think:
1. Max length from index in and pinkie in. I get no sense of control this way.
2. Index finger in and pinkie out as far as possible gives control and length.
3. Index finger out and pinkie in is my favorite and I think gives more length than both out.
4. For greatest rotation I use pinkie folded under and index out. That is the only way I can get enough revs to get my weaker balls to really move without hitting with my hand. I actually use this grip on spare ball when I shoot spares. For some reason I feel like my aim is better holding ball this way.

Placing your index finger and/or pinky finger wide apart on the ball helps to give you more leverage, which makes the ball hook more but also earlier. A better way to generate length is to change the position of your wrist.
A more cupped (fingers toward inside forearm), will generate more revolutions because at the release the hand is more underneath the ball. The opposite wrist position will have the opposite effect.
A wrist position bent to the inside of your body (turn palm so fingers are pointing to the left for right-handed or right for left-handed) will give the ball a sharper break point. This may seem uncomfortable so practice with it before trying to bowl 3 or more games.
