I'm a ten pin bowler, but Canada has 5 pin bowling. The balls are the same size a duck pin in the states (we don't have duck pin though). But the pins are smaller than 10 pin and arranged in a V (1,2,3,4,6) but spread out so the 4 and 6 are in the corners. Each pin is worth different points 5 (head pin), 3, and 2 (corners) for a total of 15 points. You get three shots but strike in 1 and spare in 2 for a max game of 450.

in japan, they use the same rules as USBC. same in germany too. i mean there are different variations, such as 5 pin and duck pin and stuff like that, but normal 10 pin is the same in japan und deustchland. haha

I'm from the US but as a ten pin bowler I'm behind enemy lines. Boston and Upper New England is Candlepin country.

As you can see, the pins are tall and skinny and the balls are slightly larger than a duckpin ball. The strange shape of the pins makes the pin action different from ten pin.

You get three balls. A strike or a spare on the first or second ball is scored like tenpin. Fallen pins, called deadwood, are left on the pindeck and can be used to pick up spares. The third ball is for count only.

This is the hardest form of bowling! The highest sanctioned score is 245. I find it so frustrating I refuse to do it anymore.

My cousin's husband was in New York for work for about 8 months and he told me about candlepin bowling. Of course he was only used to 10 pin being from Texas. He admitted that it was really difficult but made fun of his friends up there saying that he always has bigger balls than them no matter what they do.:D

Never seen nor heard of either. That five pin looks fun. I may have a better chance of striking since there is only five pins. Me and ten pins just don't seem to like each other.

I know how he feels. I grew up with duckpins in CT. I didn't learn about candlepin until I moved to MA.

did you read his post with a michigan accent, throwing in a healthy dose of "sweet" here and there as in "......is playing the sweet song "saginaw michigan", etc...."

I am thinking of moving to the caymans where they have a much more relaxed attitiude towards bowling and it is warmer, this is a shot of me last time I was down there....

...interesting, very interesting!

I've only bowled in Ireland and England and as far as I'm aware the rules are prettymuch the same as in the USA. We only really have 10 pin bowling although there is a game called Skittles that uses 10 wooden pins, a shorter lane and a smaller ball. That game is usually played in pubs (bars) but you would have to look real hard these days to find a bar with a skittle lane.

Slap I was out east last week (Luninberb Nova Scotia) and came across candle pin house. They said the highest score in that house was a 209!

Unfortunately not they where booked with a tournament that night and the next day they where closed. They do use the same sized ball as 5 pin and I'm not too fond of throwing that. Although all the old 5 pin bowlers in our 10 pin league are awesome with their spare shooting.

too bad, maybe you'll have a chance in your future travels. I don't care for the game but it's something every bowler should try once.

Around here it's one or the other. Either you're candlepiner or big baller.

I am from England originally and now live in the US. The rules are the same across the pond although the there does seem to be a difference in the standard oil patterns used but I can not put my finger on it!!!! Balls are also twice the price......

I bought my old youth team Brunswick Laser over with me for sentimental value..... cost me over $200 brand new and is now used as a spare ball!!!!

Have bowled in the usual suspects,UK,Germany,Italy,South Korea and Japan. Not the ones on US Bases, the real local places. When you open the door and hear the sound of pins going down, you know you're home. And don't EVER try to drink with the Germans and bowl at the same time!
