I was wondering if PBA bowlers can use sanded/dull/matte balls in a tournament. I always see them with polish on theirs, and I've always figured that it was to reduce hook, since they get so much already.

So, can PBA bowlers use sanded/dull/matte balls?

Yes they can. Tony reyes used a sanded bw in the tournament of champions. It's just usually after practice, and after using the sanded balls to create hook, they need the polish

It's not a dumb question at all.

I believe that a PBA bowler can do just about anything to his/her ball that we as USBC bowlers can. I know that there are some PBA members that watch the boards - maybe they can let us know.

I know that Randy Petersen had mentioned that during the TOC, all for bowlers were using "snow tires" (dull/sanded bowling balls) during their warmup period I also heard that during a tournament that Norm Duke won before the Xmas Break, that he was using a ball that was sanded to like 400 grit or something (shark pattern IIRC).

They often do this to create a dry area to hook off of, as a dull ball will soak up oil(I would never stoop to this on league night:cool: ). They can use a plastic ball to push the oil down the lane as well.

You also put surface on a bowling ball when you get too much "squirt". Meaning when you cant keep the ball online and the ball keeps pushing to the right.

You use to be able to sand flares on the bowling balls. This allowed you to sand the first couple of flares or the last couple of flares depending on what reaction you wanted.

Sanding the first couple would eliminate "squirt" but the ball being polished on the back flares would still give you strong reaction.

Sanding back flares would do the opposite. Leaving the front flares polished will give you the push needed to get through the front part of the lane. Sanding the back flares will even out reaction down the lane. This is also good when there is alot of carry down.

By rules of the PBA you are no longer allowed to sand flares in tournaments.
The whole ball has to be sanded.

Yeah. A lot happens that you don't see that goes on during match play.

i had a thought while i was at the doc's about my finger(another story) about this

i dont know when they oil it etc, but i know they have lots of games on it, and well, the lanes might be broken down that they need a pearl/polished ball to bowl with?

anybody else confirm this?

The pros go through a ton of balls during the week. Billy Oatman has a journal on his website and he mentions every ball he tried that week. It's interesting reading.

Dr BladeWell, they break the lanes down with a sanded ball, then they switch to polished. I think.

yeah, i am bowling the state pepsi challenge which is six games. I am going to stay with my sanded ball for the first 3 games, then switch.
