I cup mine. It gives me extra revs on the ball. It doesn't bother me at all. The only time my hand hurts is when I try to tuck my pinky in.

lightly cupped, which can happen as the ball starts its decent towards the boards....as you feel the ball lighten up, allow your wrist to cup, following the ball, and as you get to your release point, uncup the wrist and lift with the fingers
at least that's what I do....
I would caution against over cupping the ball, could cause alot of tendon and ligament damage either over time on all of the sudden....it's not a natural position for the hand to be in and stresses the joint incredibly with 15 or 16 pounds added to it....

I don't cup at all to be honest. I usually leave my palm parallel with the foul line until it reaches the 6 o'clock position and the thumb comes out. Then at the last second I turn my wrist to 'lift' the ball, increasing the revs that way.
I know a couple of guys who excessively cup the ball and they both suffer with wrist problems now. Mind you, that's after 10 years bowling that way.

The thing is, if you're just looking for more revs, you want to be sure that your thumb is coming out properly and on time as that has more to do with your revs than anything. If you're not getting many revs it's probably due to your thumb leaving the ball pretty late.

The key for me was learning not to grip the ball, but to let it hang on my fingers through the release....this allowed my thumb to naturally release first and my fingers to provide lift...
I add a little cup to my wrists when I need a few more revs, when the conditions warrant it.....
I play a heavy up and in shot, up the 2nd arrow (ball will move out to about the 7 or 8 board) and in....I only start putting more hand into the ball when conditions break down and I have to move 7 or more boards left on the approach....

I have seen more Rotator Cuff injuries from higher than the shoulder backswings and then snapping the wrist that I have in cupped wrist positions.
I have cupped my wriist for almost 28 years and have never had a problem. The key is to stregthen your wrist . What I did to stregthen mine is get a 10 lb. ball and hold it with palm facing up and just start cupping the wrist. Somewhat like a wrist curl. Then gradually increase weights untill you can do your weight of the ball you use without any problems.

that is what I have been doing the last few months but with one of my regular 15 lb balls, I have noticed a big difference, good point to bring up.

My good friend and fellow Pro Joe Hutchinson suffered a Rotator Cuff injury which required surgery fromm a high back swing.
