I'm not sure how to go about it, so any pointers or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

throw a ball normally and take it to a proshop with the oil track on the ball, they have the proper equipment to find it.

I also heard that you should throw your plastic ball so there is no flare.

1.The easiest way to find your PAP is borrow or buy a grease pencil from the proshop, trace the first oil. Place the ball on the flat surface oil ring down, parallel to the surface, the top of the ball is your PAP.

2.Here is another way:

I've used the hillbilly version of this with a tape measure. Probably not the greatest way to check.

3.Proshop have a nice armadillo.

Here is the skinny on your Positive Axis Point (PAP).
It will only be the same if you throw every ball identical to the last one. It's good to know, but since none of us mortals are this good, we only need to be in the ballpark on this measurement.

I have always sort of suspected that there might be some variance on PAP between shots and lines being played. I still do not have super-clear understanding of it. I know that sometimes when I look at the ball when it comes back from the ball return that I have some pretty crazy oil tracks on there, sometimes even crossing from several shots without wiping.

It seems that if you loft the ball it will land and start roll/slide/flip whatever on different parts of the ball in comparison to the pin and holes and cg.

All said I think I was told mine is either 4 and 1/2 or 4 and 3/4 and 1/2 inch up.

From what I have been told and what I understand, you are close enogh there. My proshop told if I get with in a 1/4 or so, do you think I did okay? My answer was yes, to which he agreed.

my best way and faster was asking the proshop guy to do it for me.
before i bought a new ball, i asked him to watch me roll my ball to get my PAP. surely, he was there and he took my ball two times:

1st to find the track pattern
then he put a tape on the ball and asked me to roll it again.

that's it...

Important: make sure to get a copy of your PAP and other finger drilling specs so you can take that to other drillers if the need arises. ;)

Ebonite has a method here (http://www.ebonite.com/techcenter/positiveaxispt.php),
as well as other good tips (http://www.ebonite.com/techcenter/techtips.php).

I don't mind not knowing my PAP. If it is the right oil pattern, i throw a completely different way because that is what scores the best there on that pattern.
