I gave my Pain it's first bath yesterday and didn't notice or have any issues with the grips. I used 120F hot tap water.

I usually sand the cover down to 600 before bathing. But I use a few drops of Dawn dish soap for the first soaking then clean water for another maybe 2. Then take the cover back to what I want it at.

maybe i'm a little dense, but when you bathe a ball, isn't the only thing you care about is getting the oil out of the track where the ball is rolling? and for most of us, our track is away from the grips, so why do you need to submerge the whole ball?

Because of the flare. Some of our bowling balls have a lot of flare like the Black Widow Pearl and the Black Widow Solid. Since there is so much more flare then other, more simple, bowling balls, it is easier to submerge the whole bowoling ball. Technically, what you are asking there, not to sound like an ass or anything, is why would your resurface the whole bowling ball, why not just the track?

Just my two cents.

I don't put a thing over the finger holes. If you did,how would you pull it out of the bucket?

Haha, good point. I did it though. I put duct tape over the holes and I just picked it up and out of the water. Very slowly because it is very slippery.:p

That's my point.Be a shame to miss a couple of MONTHS bowling because you dropped the ball on your foot!

I've been using bathroom and kitchen sinks for years. Never worried about bathing around the grips. But, never really worried to much about getting the holes wet either, just do not make a practice of prolonging the grips or holes to hot water. (Hotel/Motel water is always good!)

I usually start by bathing the ball in clean water, maybe scrubbing the ball. Then lather the whole ball in dish soap let it getting the pores. Then let it sit in hot out of the tap, water. I'll repeat with hot water several more times. If needed, will put the ball on the spinner to clean up the surface.

If your ball has been abused... not cleaned regularly. It is preferred to clean your bowling ball after bowling or right when you get home. Not right before bowling, the reason for this is your ball got to set in whatever lane oil and dirt since the last time you bowled. You might get some of oil out of the ball and probably get the dirt off the ball. My point here is that it will be best to get your ball surfaced down to around 320 to 400 grit, this will open up the pores of the ball allowing more oil to escape. Once you have gotten the ball clean, get your favorite surface placed back on the ball.

By the way it’s against the rules to only sand the track of the ball. (Pretty sure about this.)

My Personal Disclaimers:
*** Never use the drain plugs in kitchen sinks, always clean the sink before and rinse in between soakings. Do not recommend getting the holes wet. There have been plenty of people who have never had any trouble. Bit I don’t leave my bowling balls in the car for an extended period of time either. ***
