One place here wants $60 for drilling, grips, and thumb slug, another wants $70. Is this normal pricing? Of course since it's California things are more expensive, but I was just curious.

Transltr, where did you buy the ball?If you bought it from him,I would expect it to be drilled for free, but you would have to pay for any inserts you wanted in the ball?If you DIDN'T buy it from him,are there more than one or two proshops in your area? The less drillers around, the higher prices are gonna be.Another thing affecting the price COULD be the layout that you want.If it involves a lot of work to make the ball legal, then you gotta pay for that.If you put on here what kind of ball, layout, inserta and the like we could probably tell you better if $70 is a fair price.Okay?

One center charges 50+10 for inserts
another does 30+10 for inserts

Whats the draw to thumb slug? Should i be getting one of these?

If you have problems with your thumb sticking or an inconsistant release due to something about your thumb they can help. The reactive material sticks to your thumb (friction) exactly like it does on the lane... so for some people like myself a slug is almost necessary in order to ensure a stable release. The slug is made of urethane... not reactive material... so you get a smooth move off your thumb everytime.

My guy here in Atlanta, Ga charges $40 for drilling and 3 inserts if you buy the ball from him. But if you bring in an internet ball he charges $80.
Seems fair that pro shop owners would charge more on balls not bought from them, especially since buying balls online has become so popular.
I personally like to buy balls from my pro shop since then I am sure I get a perfect ball with good pin placement and a perfect surface and such. Had some friends get some balls with surface plugs and such already in them when ordering online. Bad surfaces etc..

My favorite pro-shop in the area (hackensack) is $50 for drill and $20 for grips and slug

My least favorite is $55 for drill, grips, and slug (but he tends to be a little off on the drilling from time-to-time..

these are for internet purchases

BTW - pro-shop in hackensack has a display 15# Zilla that I am looking at...

I just don't bowl on lanes with enough oil to justify it though...

Nooooo Dont go down that road. Once you do you'll never come back. One of my teamates doesn't even use grips. Just 3 holes in the ball, he drills them himself at the proshop, the owner doesn't even charge him anything.

Well, I found a guy at another local house that only charges $35 for everything. He even spent awhile with me on a lane throwing shots to look at my form and to figure out my PAP, so he could work with me to figure out what layout would work best. I had my Pain with me and since that ball is very comfortable to me, that kind of gave us a starting point. I am picking both up this evening, so I will see how things go. He didn't seem to have an "anti-internet" mindset that I have found at other shops. And because of that he gets the order for my Bruswick Classics. His price was maybe $20 over what it would cost me online and I want to give the local guy the business as long as it isn't a big hit in the wallet.
