I was told that when you set(before you throw) the weight from your ball should go all in your left hand. While your right hand(if your are right handed) should be used to control the position on the ball before you step out to throw. Now this works for me but since i have hears some diffrent things about this being wrong.I was wondering what anyone else does with the ball and if everyone does it different.

I hold the weight pretty evenly in both hands, then push the ball out in front of me to start my backswing. It works for me. To each their own.

I make my wife hold it before I bowl...that way she can get tired when she throws...hahaha

When I'm setting I'm holding it to the right (I'm a righty). Then I push off, let the weight of the ball swing back, let it swing back forward, and do my best to get a good release after GUIDING the ball through my swing... not muscling it thru.

yeah..I hold my ball to the right being a righty..I find that if you hold the ball in the middle it causes your backswing to go out and behind you..and it makes it harder for a consistant release

yeah thats what i was originally told to do.the only difference is the ball is keept more in the middle of my body.my line doent change just my feet move.but a guy saw me bowling and told me i was doing it all wrong.
The ball should be lined up with your shoulder to create a "straight swing path" from your shoulder to your target.
When the ball is in front of you, lets say lined up with your navel, your body is "in the way" of the swing. To avoid hitting yourself with the ball your backswing will go "around and back" instead of "straight back."
Like anything else in bowling, if a bowler is consistent with such a backswing it's fine but generally that's not the case.
As for holding the ball it depends on how strong you are. The ideal situation is to distribute the weight between two hands. I'm fairly strong so I hold most of the weight with my throwing hand.

I hold the ball in my left hand when bowling righty. When I'm bowling lefty I hold it in the right hand. There is a web site; bowling4fun that Ron Clifton says you shouldn't feel the weight if the ball until you let go with the non swing hand. Ron has an article on the subject and I most times do it his way.:)

Slap is right on with lining up the ball with your shoulder. It's important to keep the ball from wrapping around your body.

Tinkerbell,
From what I've read, you're supposed to do what you're doing. Now the thing with the elbow. I've been told, that if you keep the elbow close to your side, you will not swing the ball. If your elbow hangs loose, you can swing the ball more. This is what I've read and heard, hope it helps.

Tinker what i do is pick up the ball with my left and then position the ball on my hand(i have a weird hand position) and then swing!
