I have been thinking about this for a while and I can't figure out how to have my Black Widow Pearl drilled. Should I have it drilled the same as my Black Widow? I throw about medium revs and about 16-17 mph.

That's my plan. I want to go to the BWP when the BWS is just too much. I've seen differing thoughts on this, so it'll be interesting to read some more replies. The more input, the more I'll know when I finally get around to ordering mine.

YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,YES,(are you seeing a pattern here?)and, last but not least,YES!That's the way I'm drilling mine. When the BWS can't carry the load anymore, just pull out the BWP and keep on Keepin' on.

I too am a 17 MPH bowler who throws on the stroker/tweener side (270-285 revs).
Iv'e already posted my position on this. I do not like the idea of two balls drilled to do the same thing. With the same drilling the BWP might go a little longer than the BWS. Not enough difference for me.
My lamest arsenal ever was the Toxic and Black Widow drilled to do the same thing. Best arsenal ever was Black Widow -- all purpose, and No Mercy -- #1 max hook. I would start the evening with the BW and when it hooked too much I would move way left and bash the pins from the inside using the No Mercy.
I say go two different ways. My choices are max hook for lots of oil; and skid/flip for less oil or when I want to play straight up the arrows.
BTW: My Black Widow Solid is not in the present rotation because I have changed pitch on my new equipment and have not updated BWS yet. BWS will come back in its old all purpose (#2) drilling for normal league shot, tournaments, and Cheetah on PBA experience.

I'm going in a little early tonight for my league to buy my BWP finally! I'm going to talk to my proshop guy about how i should get it drilled. Also for him to take a look at my BWS, mayb a little resufacing is needed.

I also have got to ask the guy to check my PAP out. I really need to know. I don't want the driller to drill anymore balls without knowing my PAP. It's too much of a risk I think.

A risk for what?

I don't know. It's just what I've been told. :D

its a risk because if the core gets placed more then 3 3/8, the core will not spin correct... i have still gotta learn more about it... but if the pin to pap is more then 3 3/8 you basicly have a spare ball.... or can anybody correct me on this?

I don't think that's right. On this website and even in drilling layouts I've seen Pin to PAP measurements of more than 4"...

Here is what I speak of:
http://hammerbowling.com/tech_info/detail.php?drilling=Black%20Widow%20Drilling%20Ins tructions
All the drillings as I see them are placing PAP between 4 and 5 1/2 from pin.

yeh... i know its gotta do with something 3 3/8 and thats about it.... i will have to ask again...

I am blatantly coping this from br.com. Keep in mind this is an generalization...
Pin to PAP distance:
0" - minimum flare potential, core is in it's most stable position, earliest roll with smoothest arc.
1 1/8" - 1/3 of flare potential, stable core position, earlier roll with smooth arc.
2 1/4" - 2/3 of flare potential, semi stable core position, early roll with strong arc.
3 3/8" - max flare potential, most unstable core position, medium length with the most hook potential.
4 1/2" - 2/3 of flare potential, semi stable core position, late roll with flip/arc reaction.
5 5/8" - 1/3 of flare potential, stable core position, later roll with a flip reaction.
6 3/4" - minimum flare potential, stable core position, latest roll with strongest flip

looks like i might have to ask my coach again see what he actually ment..

Thanx slap for that. I actually learned a lot through that.

No prob. Just remember that's not the "final answer" per se. There are still other factors involved. I'm sure Quest will be along and he is more qualified to explain in greater detail.

These of course are generalizations. What works for one, may not work for some. You have to remember that no two people throw the ball exactly the same. You have to take into account axis tilt, rpm, and ball speed to match up to a ball and drilling patterns. These are very good general guidelines, and you shouldn't go wrong with them. When you get more advanced and onto a CATS system, you can really go crazy with different layouts to produce minute differences in your ARSENAL. Oh shit, did I say that word? Is Crusher around? Oops, sorry. Let's not get into that again, please.

well after careful thinking on the bw...and looking at its core density ..coverstock..and all that makes this ball..if I were you..I would have it drilled...with 3 holes in it.....thank you..have a nice day.

i ordered my BWP today and i had it drilled the same as my BW. He had 1 16lb BWP left and i'm glad its mine. He took it out and it was layed out almost exactly the same as my BW...the pin was identical. I'm going to be picking up the ball on Monday before my PBA league and hopefully going to be able to throw a game with it.
Here is how my BWS is layed out:

Saw a guy one nite go outside to his pickup, pull out a concrete block and after laying a towel over it,took out his trusty Craftsman drill and procede to drill his ball right there in the parking lot! This was about 25 years ago. Funny thing, ball worked like a charm.

If i knew how to layout a ball, and learn how deep to drill the holes, i could drill it on my dad's drill press in my garage. That's how i made one of my skateboards, just cut out the maple on the ban saw, my dad has, then drilled the holes.

I'd LOVE to see WRW pr PDW do this in between matches on TV. "who needs that truck with those fancy drillpresses anyway".
