Ok guys I'm trying to help out my old man here. his avg from last year was at 210, and so far this year he his hovering just above 200. Every week when we tell each other about how we did, he scores pretty well, but I know he can score better, and he does too, and more consistently anyway. every week he talks about how many 10 pins, 9 pins, and 8 pins and 7 pins he left, but says he has been rolling the ball really nice, pounding the pocket, but somethin in the back row always seems to be standing. everybody leaves the corners, but hes leaving the back row EVERY WEEK. He throws a Columbia Ricochet Rebound if you guys know anything about it. What is there that he can do to not leave so many 8s and 9s specifically? hes just like me, a stroker around 14-15 mph medium revs.

When you leave 8 pins and 9 pins you are just a little bit high in the pocket so If I were him I would move one board left(if hes right handed). But when you are leaving 8 and 9 pins they are good shots.

If you are leaving 10's for righty's and 7's for lefties, there a couple of things you can try.
If your leaving a FLAT ten pin, Either your in too deep & the oil is restricting the hitting power, you are swinging the ball too much & the ball rolls out,.you are throwing a too shiny surfaced ball that is not grabbing the lane enough to drive thru the pocket, your speed is too fast or your not getting any fingers/lift out of the ball.
Move your line & feet out 2 boards at a time until you get a better reaction .Don't loop the ball so much.Try throwing/aiming further down the lane. This will cut out that lazy loop. On oily lanes/shot,you need a ball that is either drilled to hook or dull up the surface for more traction. lower the ball in your stance for less of an armswing, take a much bigger first step,if your throwing a light ball, get a heavier one.
If your leaving a solid ten,
Slightly change your hand position. Change speed. Change the angle/shot .Slightly re-position your pointing finger ,Aim further down the lane. Spread out your pinkie.
Move the ball up an inch in your stance for slightly more speed. Move in/tighter inside line.It will reduce the angle & drive. 4.If your pointing finger is stretched out all the way, bring it in to your other finger .5.By aiming further down the lane, your changing angle & line.If your aiming at the arrows, try 5 or 10 feet past the arrows. It will make you stretch thru & stay lower decreasing the hit on the ball.6.If your pinkie is in tight next to your other finger, spread it out. This will give you a little lift in your pinkie creating a straighter shot.7. Move in a little with our feet to hit a half pocket hit to change deflections.Move your line in for less angle creating a different point of impact.8.Go to a less friction ball. You will get a little more deflection of the ball creating different deflection angles of the pins.
As for leaving the 8 pin, the shot was gtood and drove the 5 pin straight back instead of into the 8 pin. If you leave the solid 9 pin, the ball was driving so hard , it did not deflect off of the 5 into the 9. It just drove right past the 9 pin.
