After watching the show from Japan,I was really disappionted in ESPN's coverage. Randy Pederson should have spent less time singing karaoke and more time finding out who was throwing what. No mention of the oil pattern,no graphic overlay on the lane with the pattern, geez ABC did a better job way back when. Go on ESPN's website and leave them a message to get their butts in gear like I did. We deserve better than we're getting. Anyone else notice that there was not one bowling product commercial at all? No balls,no shoes,no grips, not even the USBC saw fit to buy some time. I don't know if Hammer sells all the balls it makes every year, but there's a golden opportunity here to sell some balls and equipment and get some people interested in the brand. Some edgy commercials with some Hammer attitude would look good on a Sunday afternoon. I'll produce it for free if they want to cough up the coin for it.

I agree with everything you said, but this part especially. It came up on the PBA forums when the US Womens Open was discussed, and this is a response from Ryan Shafer about the "In The Bag" segments that were shown:
" I was confused as to why they were allowed to do an "In The Bag " segment. On our telecasts. ESPN won't allow any mentioning of products by name because they want companies to buy ad time. If I were the ball companies, I would demand something like this or I would get together and refuse to pay the ever increasing product registration fees. Hopefully, they add this segment and get rid of the ridiculous atmosphere of the trick shots."

I think most of the problem is that ESPN is trying to tailor the show too much to the recreational bowler, not the avid bowler (us), hence the trick shot segments that we've seen for a while now. While mildly entertaining, I think it's run it's course for a while, and needs to disappear for a few years. Anyway, ESPN needs to tailor the show more in the direction of the more knowlegeable bowlers. All of Randy's antics may not be *his* fault - It's all in how the show is produced, and I think there's too much "kingpin" involved in the telecasts (and I thought that it was a pointless movie to boot).
Since the Dydo cup was held in Japan, I wouldn't expect to see much, if any advertising from the USBC. That being said, you'll see a ton of it this weekend with the USBC Masters on ESPN on Sunday. Beyond that, we'll have to see what happens.
For what it's worth, I thought Bo Burton and Marshall Holman did a great job in the Ladies' US Open. My favorite (and long-running) discussion was how to cover corner pins (plasitc ball vs. killing the wrist). That's one discussion that will never end...

As far as the trick shots go, I hope they keep running that because it is vey entertaining. As far as the rest of it, I agree with everything.

My opinion, the PBA has to bring back the old step ladder format like years ago. And as for the announcers, they should make Bo Burton and Marshall permanent.

My biggest complaint is just that they don't tell us what pattern they are bowling on, i think it would help give us a better idea what to do on those same patterns.
I would love to have a in the bag segment.

I don't mind the trick shot shows, it's just that we've seen the same one at least twice now.. Tape some new shows!!!

I also like the coaches minute when they were doing the ladies competition about 3 weeks back.

I actually like the "in the bag" thing, and wish thet they would do it for the men's as well because I would like to know what Tony Reyes and Doug Kent bring and how they have it sanded for what conditions, because it would be not only informative but would also give me insight on what to switch to depending on conditions.
I watched the japan cup like I'm sure the rest of you did, I wasn't too impressed with the lighting of it or the lane conditons, which seemed to be really bad from the t.v view. And what really got me was how some of the japanese players seemed to have really bad games either due to the lane conditions or having a bad day, but some of the scores was just bad for being that far into the tourney.

i kinda disagree... yes it would be boring tv to watch... all the time ppl do bowl bad... because of mentally... injuryed or just being damm tired... so you cant really blame anybody for the bowling bad as i'm pretty sure we have seen 1 of the pros bowl really bad?

U do have to remember, thats probably the biggest amount of people they bowled infront of on live tv and in the huge arena. They dont do that every week like our pro's do. That one japenese guy did good just couldnt carry the 7. Most of them bowled good just got nervous at certain points. That old japenese guy was good.

Its not just everything thats been said already. But how many of you all had to tilt your head to try to figure out what they were even throwing. I never heard a word about anything except that the were throwing on a oil pattern that is used a lot over there. I really wanted to know what BB were being thrown and how long the oil pattern was. They have more work to do on the shows.
As for the trick shot show I thought it was fun to watch. But I went to youtube and already know who won.

I totally agree with you. I dont like Randy that much and then they had Dave Ryan on who knew absolutely nothing about the game he was just reading everything off of a piece of paper and now they have this new guy I dont know his name but hes probably the same way. Bo and Marshall have bowled forever and were two greats of the sport and they should host it.

Did you guys notice that Japanese dude throwing the No Mercy? Don't they ever clean the ball over there? They had one close up of him and the ball looked awful!
As far as who is throwing what, golf has whats known as the Darrell Survey, where they look at what kind of clubs, balls, gloves, bag everything the player is using that day. Bowling should have something simular. I wanna know whats in those bags!
Remember,go to ESPN.com and tell 'em what YOU want to see on YOUR show!
