2007-08 Sponsor Teams Announced
SEATTLE - 11/2/2007
The PBA announced today the sponsored bowlers who will compete in the 2007-08 PBA Sponsor Competition that will take place throughout the 2007-08 Denny’s PBA Tour.
The competition will feature 10 PBA sponsors which each selected three Denny’s PBA Tour stars, with the exception of title sponsor Denny’s, which will carry six players. The players will be ranked individually based on the PBA World Point Rankings throughout the season-long competition.
The leader at the end of the season will take home $12,000 of the $50,000 total prize fund. Each bowler will earn at least $500 for taking part in the competition. The bowler finishing second will earn $8,000, third receives $5,000 and fourth and fifth will earn $4,000 and $3,000, respectively.
“We are very pleased to be able to continue the sponsor competition for another season,” said PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer. “The season-long competition adds another element of excitement to the Denny’s PBA Tour and creates even more awareness of our sponsors.”
Bowlers involved in the 2007-08 PBA Sponsor Competition will wear sponsor logos on their shirt backs and right sleeves. In addition, they will have the option to use specially-made spare balls emblazoned with the sponsor logo which will be situated on the ball returns during competition.
Each PBA sponsor was able to retain up to two exempt players that represented them last season. A draft was held to fill the sponsors’ open spots.
Last season, Wes Malott captured 2006-07 PBA Sponsor Competition. It was the first time in his career Malott led the PBA World Point Rankings and marked his first win in the PBA Sponsor Competition. Malott was followed in the 2006-07 standings by Chris Barnes, who was retained by Pepsi, and Pete Weber, who will stay with the Etonic team, which drafted Malott for the upcoming season.
Doug Kent, the 2006-07 PBA Player of the Year who also won the season-ending Motel 6 Roll to Riches which offered a $150,000 top-prize, was drafted by Motel 6. Title sponsor Denny’s boasts all-time titles leader Walter Ray Williams Jr., former PBA Players of the Year Patrick Allen and Tommy Jones and 2006-07 PBA Rookie of the Year Billy Oatman along with Tony Reyes and Mike Scroggins.
