ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Team USA's Bill Hoffman of Columbus, Ohio, and Lynda Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, easily advanced past the first cut and into the quarterfinals Wednesday at the 2007 QubicaAMF World Cup.

Hoffman put together a six-game block of 1,390 and sits in second with 5,489 after 24 games. Barnes sits in 10th place overall in the women's division with 5,010 for 24 games, an average of 208. The pair were among the top 24 in each division who advanced to the quarterfinals.

Jason Belmonte of Australia remained in the men's lead with 5,606 and actually gained 10 pins on Hoffman for the day. But in the final two games, Hoffman soared back with 247 and 269 to make up nearly 60 pins on the Australian.

Hoffman started the block with games of 199, 241, 238 and 196 and said his two low games were a bit deceptive.

"Today was just another example of my scores not reflecting how physically well I bowled," Hoffman said. "The two 190 games were 230s in disguise. Bad racks and bad pairs cost me a lot of pins in those two games."

Barnes, meanwhile, continued to struggle with stringing together strikes and had her lowest six-game block of the tournament so far with 1,232.

"I still feel like I'm throwing the ball well, but I just can't seem to throw enough strikes," said Barnes, a 10-time Team USA member. "It seems as though every time I get matched up on a lane it's time to switch to a new pair and start over again."

After games of 195, 235, 204, 180, 232 and 185 Wednesday, Barnes is currently on the outside of the next cut, which will be made to the top eight after eight more games Thursday. She is 169 pins out of first place and just 18 pins behind eighth.

Netherlands left-hander Ghislaine van der Tol shot 1,402 to surge into the lead in the women's division with a 24-game total of 5,179, an average of 215. Van der Tol had three games of 250 or better in her six-game set Wednesday.

Fellow left-hander, Sharon Koh of Malaysia, also scored well in the final qualifying block, using a 1,324 total to move into second place with 5,168. Sue Abela of Malta, who led after three rounds, fell back to fifth place with 5,094 after shooting 1,171.

With 24 games of qualifying now completed, the remaining 24 players in each division return Thursday for the eight-game quarterfinals. The field will then be cut to the top eight players for round-robin match play semifinals Friday. The top three players in each division then advance to the finals Saturday.

Some "youtubers" thought Belmonte sucks because he uses two hands. They don't even know Belmonte beat paul moors in championship match with a 300 included...

until you try the two handing yourself its easy to disrespect, if they try it for a minute, they will wonder how ANYONE can average 200 like that. I couldnt even pick a right side spare with it, the spare hooked too much (right hander)
