Eddie Graham hopes his past success at Stardust Bowl II will come in handy in this week’s 2007 Lake County Indiana Classic presented by United Way.
Graham led Wednesday’s Denny’s PBA Tour Qualifying Round with a 1,614 seven-game pinfall, advancing to the Round of 64 for the first time this season.
The 42-year-old finished fourth in the 2006 Regional Players Championship and 26th in this summer’s Denny’s PBA Tour Trials at Stardust Bowl II. He’ll look to make the top 32 in tomorrow’s Round of 64 and advance to match play, which would guarantee him his best career finish in a Denny’s PBA Tour event.
“I’ve had two really good weeks of practice since the Masters,” Graham (Centerville, Ohio) said. “Today was one of those days where nothing went wrong. I used the same ball and didn’t have to move all day and had a great cross. It was one of those dream crosses.”
Graham used a 233 in the final game of the day to overtake rookie Rhino Page (Topeka, Kan.), who finished second in the TQR for the third consecutive week. Page, a Team USA member who recently became a PBA member, is one week shy of tying the record for most consecutive weeks advancing through the TQR. He finished with 1,596 for a 228.00 average.
Three local players advanced to the Round of 64 including Chris Cundiff (Portage, Ind.) in third with 1,564, Bill Crane III (Noblesville, Ind.) in sixth with 1,517 and PBA Senior Tour bowler Kenny Parks (Hammond, Ind.), who finished ninth with 1,500.
Also advancing were Derek Sapp (Keokuk, Iowa), Bo Goergen (Midland, Mich.), Ward Rauch (Cheboygan, Mich.), four-time Denny’s PBA Tour titlist David Traber (Hebron, Ill.) and Denny's PBA Tour champion Kurt Pilon (Warren, Mich.).
Mark Siders (Westerville, Ohio) also advanced as the top amateur, finishing tied for seventh with 1,506.
The top 10 PBA members advanced to the Round of 64 as six exempt bowlers withdrew from the event (Brad Angelo, Jeff Carter, Jason Couch, Tim Criss, Patrick Healey Jr., Tony Reyes). Thursday’s Round of 64 and PBA Women’s Series Round of 16, which feature two seven-game qualifying blocks, gets underway at 10 a.m. CST. The top 32 men and top eight women will advance to match play on Friday.
The top four men and top two women after Friday’s match play will advance to Sunday’s championship round live on ESPN at Noon CST. The two men’s semifinals take place first, followed by the women’s title match and men’s title match.
