I bought a hammer no mercy about 2 months ago and although it hooks more than my old ball..it doesn't hook as much as i'd like. maybe 5 boards of hook at most.. the lanes i bowl on are house lanes and they are usually dry to medium oil..not heavy oil by any means. my question is if i'm looking for a ball that can hook decently in light-medium oil..which hammer ball would be the best fit?

Whoa, whoa, whoa. First off,how is the ball drilled? How do you throw it? Has it been cleaned lately? All of these things will affect the balls hooking ability.

Im not trying to sound rude or be an arse, but.....if you have a No Mercy and can only get it to hook 5 boards on medium to dry, then I think your going to have problems in finding anything else that will hook more. Unless you can find a very high load particle ball

Let me start buy saying the one you are throwing now will get the job done. It depends on your release. Do you have enough hand or revs on the ball to get it to do what you want. I have a NM and I have no problem geting the ball to hook from 20-5 when needed. Try changing you axis tile on the ball . To give you an idea on how to increase the amount of turn or revs on the ball, stay underneath the ball with your hand through the armswing and release klike you your knuckles are going to drag on the floor and at the point of release at your slide foot, come around the ball in a counter clockwise motion with your hand. Here is a link to some information someone posted on how to increase turn on the ball.

dry to medium?
5 boards of hook?
This is an easy one. It's burning up. Get it polished and report back to us...

I'm having a similar issues with my No Mercy. I can stand around the center dot and throw it out to the 7th board. It doesn't look like it's hooking much but it's "arching" most of the way down the lane then it makes a small move just before the pins. Because of my style, I can't really play any other line with it unless a lot of the lane is dry. I'm thinking of getting the toxic to get more of a skid/flip ball to hopefully improve my entry angle.

This makes two more No Mercy owners who have the ball drilled wrong. Didn't Stampy have the same problem? Someone else did a few months back. After a redrill to a better layout, the ball came alive. Sounds like your drillers got mixed signals on which drill job to put in the ball.

Slap is right, it's burning up.
If you are really just itching for a new ball though, go for one of the vibes.

I did buy the ball when I knew little about bowling. It has a 2" pin and the hart is slightly outside of my track, my release has changed a little bit since it was drilled.

The hart needs to be close to your track, not totally in it. But I think it is burning up, I've had this problem with the BW when I tried to play up the 5 board, it just rolled out into the 3-6

Vibes are the most popular choice for dry lanes, although I did try using a toxic on medium/dry lanes a few times and had some good results with it.

The hart is supposed to be.....what? Isn't it the third oil ring? My ribs are too sore to reach for the damn book.:(

So, perhaps polish ontop of the 4000 grit? I bowl on wood lanes that are freshly oiled before we roll. Even then, when I'm throwing it in oil it's not a huge difference in boards being covered. I tend to only move over a few boards left and keep the same outside target the whole night.
for the #1, hart near or in the track

Yep, I agree with the guys preaching surface surface surface, get the surface retouched to 2000 or 4000 and add polish, unless you have alot of track marks, then resurfacing would be a good idea, may even solve your problem.

At 4000 grit, how much would the polish help? Also, how long does polish typically last? I really don't want to go into the pro-shop every week to have them add polish. Speaking of that, could I add it myself or is it best applied when on a spinner?

first of all, i am not a cranker, i probably don't throw the ball more than 14 or 15 mph. i focus more on my accuracy and form than how hard and fast i throw it. i took the drilling instructions to the driller and he said the layouts they gave are not legal on league..so if i was to throw a 300 it would not count..so i just told him i throw it between 14-15 and i wanted it drilled so i could hook it a lil easier than me having to completey force all of the hook myself. i wasn't about to get a ball drilled to be illegal to use on league.

he has been drilling balls for over 20 years. and all the ppl who average 200 or better..also bowl on league..have went to state tournaments..said the same thing. the way they have the layout u can't have hart and pin placement the way they tell u to and have it be legal.
a. Holes - The following limitations govern drilling holes in a bowling ball:
1. Holes or indentations, not to exceed five, for gripping purposes.
2. One hole for balance purposes, not to exceed 1-1/4 inch in diameter.
3. One (1) vent hole to each finger and/or thumb hole, not to exceed 1/4 inch in diameter.
4. One mill hole for inspection purposes, not to exceed 5/8 inch in diameter and 1/8 inch in depth.
b. Balance - The following tolerances are allowed in the balance of the ball:
1. For a ball weighing 10.01 pounds or more:
a) Not more than three ounces difference between the top of ball (finger hole side) and the bottom (solid side opposite finger holes).
b) Not more than one ounce difference between the sides to the right and left of the finger holes or between the sides in front and back of the finger holes.
the bottom part is what they all said would be illegal. the ounces on top to bottom and side to side.

No you're wrong and your driller is wrong and apparently neither of you read too well.
1. Why would a company provide instructions for an improper drilling?
2. Are you or your driller aware that HART introduced a new concept in bowling layouts? This was big news, if your driller stays current with his craft, he should have been well aware of this.
3. Did you read and comprehend this part "Do not use traditional mass bias layouts for the Hammer No Mercy!!!"
There are a lot of smart and helpful people on this board. However please don't insult our intelligence with irrelevant cut and paste facts. We know our Hammers. If you don't know something ask and you will receive an answer or at least an educated guess. Many of us own the NM and/or NMB. With a proper layout this the NMs are great balls.
Your driller screwed up your NM and owes you a ball. However I recommend you find someone else to drill it.

so when i get another ball...where should i take it to get it drilled? there is nowhere close...maybe 2 hours away is the closest to another place where i could get it drilled. that's a long way just to get a ball drilled.

If you must, tell him that's it's your ball and you don't care if it's "illegal" and to drill it how hammer suggests anyways. Have him read the info Hammer has provided about drilling the NM. Maybe have him call Hammer so he can understand how to lay this ball out.

Or tell the driller that "Hooked on Phonics" really does work.
If a driller cant drill MY BALL that i paid over $200.00 for the way I WANT IT, then he can go screw himself and you can bet I'd drive 200 miles both ways to get it done MY WAY.
There's nothing worse that a driller who's a know it all and don't know how to drill a Hammer ball with the instructions GIVEN OFF THE SITE ITSELF. And if the jabroni screwed up my ball, you can bet I'd be all over him about it.

post a pic up when you get a new ball..place your info with the picture...tell us what you want it to do...the we could possibly copy your pic and spot tell you how to drill it...there are people on this board that know alot about these balls and drillings...obviously your driller doesnt...I can pretty much assure you we can give you a better layout using adobe paint than your driller gave you...2 hours isnt that much of a drive if you want it done right...cause if you give it to your driller Im sure he will do the sae thing and mess up your ball...send a pic on the board...with your span and what you want it to do..your pap and so forth...Im sure one of us can get you a proper layout drawn on the ball in the pic..then you tell your driller this is what I want.if he says anything or doesnt want to drill it that way..take off your bowling shoe..and slap him in the face with it.

Well that's what I did to finally get two balls that really fit me now. It's worth the 4 hours to have something that fits and works that you will be using for thousands of frames.

Hey if you're looking to just blow $200 bucks, don't buy a ball and take it back to the same guy. Just send the cash to me. I'll make sure it doesn't go to waste. It'll go straight into my Vegas side pot money.$$$$$$:) :) :) Drive the 2 hours. It will be well worth it. But still send me the $$$$.

I did not read all the posts in here, but the reason it may not be hooking is lack of oil or at least head oil. The NM needs the oil !

i don't know if anyone has had a problem with a black widow solid, but i have noticed when the lanes start to dry up it takes a lot more work for me to get my ball to hook. i'm able to and that's why it's not a problem for me, but i'm just saying from my own experience that my solid throws a hell of a lot better when there is oil on the lane. i hate dry conditions!! luckily i have my pearl that i can use when it gets drier. unfortunately i had it drilled not aggressive enough for my style. about half the time i can't get the ball to finish the way i want it to (like my solid). oh well. i guess i will just have to move right. only if i could get the same movement on drier lanes with my pearl as i do with my solid on oiler conditions.
