GREENDALE, Wis. - With the entry deadline for the 2008 USBC Open Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., still more than a month away and team reservations coming in at a steady pace, it has been decided that the tournament will be extended by eight days to allow room for additional teams.
The tournament, now scheduled to run for 143 days at the Albuquerque Convention Center, will begin on Feb. 16, 2008 and conclude on July 7, 2008. The final day for team competition will be July 6.
So far, 11,642 teams are scheduled to bowl, which is well ahead of the 10,688 teams that turned out for the tournament's first trip to Albuquerque in 2000, and fourth among non-Reno years.
The largest tournament held outside of Reno was in Baton Rouge in 2005 and featured 13,222 teams, which was followed by Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2006 (12,606) and Knoxville, Tenn., in 2003 (12,203).
On a side note, Brunswick Corp. has been selected to install the lanes for the 2008 and 2009 Open Championships, as well as the 12-lane side event in 2008. Brunswick exclusively installed the championship lanes from 1901 until 1957, and then every other year until the late 1990s when the selection process changed. The company most recently supplied the lanes in 2005 and 2006.
The entry deadline for the 2008 event is Dec. 14, and there are still plenty of prime bowling times available.
