Let me start out by saying that at practice I do not shoot for score. I don't even try for strike shots. Even though my games have been lacking, I know that I fully understand how to make a strike shot and that isn't what was missing from my game (despite not having many ;) ). But after watching those video's I adjusted my practice schedule (during open bowling AND during practice time before league) to a "feeling out the lane" playtime rather than a "lets repeat the strike line" regime.
I bowl league on Saturday evenings.
Last Saturday I had a HELLUVA night. Some of you may have remembered me recently thanking Stampy for posting WRWJr Instructional videos, and me stating how I was at least making average. Well the practice seems to be paying off.
I was cool, calm, collected, balanced, aware, and focused. All night. And I was rewarded by only having one bad frame.
My first game was a 231. No open frames.
My second game was a 224. I bombed the 10th frame. The first shot I threw an eight count, and I missed both pins of the spare. BTW, it was my only bad shot all night.
Third game I shot a 235. No open frames. I smashed the pocket in the first shot of the tenth frame and left a stiff 9 pin.
I shot a 690 series as if I shot high all the time.
It was amazing! I knew what I had to do, and instead of over thinking things I just got up, set up for my shot, had a very relaxed, lower backswing followed by a full follow through. My elbow was straight and I wasn't rolling over my thumb hole. And the pins just went down!
Not every hit went to the pocket, but at least where I was picking up my spares. I stayed in the pocket for the majority of the night, however. I was adjusting correctly... not overadjusting like I usually do. And I wasn't trying to force the ball to the pocket... I watched the ball and adjusted myself to accomodate the way it wanted to roll.
All this from a guy that's been a mess since this league started. My average is at 175 and it was dropping every week.
Now I know this doesn't mean that every week will be this great, but if I can keep the same attitude with the same level of awareness and focus the I should be able to at least get back up to a 195 average - which is my goal for this winter season.
So that's all. I just wanted to share my most recent flirt with the elusive 700 series ;) Still waiting for the first.
