Lifts are called lifts for a reason. A small lip causes your fingers enter the ball at an angle to give you a little extra turn or "lift" on the ball.

well, my experience with drilling and setting up equipment for different people and styles I have learned that most crankers prefer the ovals for the simple fact that they feel the ball on their hand better. A few will use lifts, but not many. They seem to have an inconsistant roll with the lifts. If you are a cranker, I would stay with the oval/flats. As far as shoes go, but the adjustable soles. Eventually you will need to adjust them due to weather conditions.

Keep in mind that lifts will change the pitch of the your fingers, just incase you have any issues.
If you have the revs, why do you or need more lift?

I actually prefer ovals... I get a better feel for the ball with them. The lifts just don't give me the same feeling... I actually get less revs with them.
Shoes are VERY important. The shoes you have sound like they were a good start, but being able to PUSH with your back foot is very important. I've noticed a huge improvement in my approach since getting my SST7's.
