VERNON HILLS, Ill. - 11/23/2007

After a huge win over Pete Weber in the position round at Hawthorn Lanes Friday night, Robert Smith was satisfied with the thought of being the No. 3 seed for Sunday’s championship round in the PBA Tour’s CLR Windy City Classic.

Little did he know his 279 game had pushed him all the way from fifth in the standings to the top seed.

Smith defeated Weber, 279-226, in the No. 5 vs. No. 6 seeding match to finish with a 13-5 record and a 7,644 32-game pinfall to earn an automatic berth in the title match of Sunday’s stepladder finals.

The six-time champion, who hasn’t won since early in 2004, was leading the field with four games to go, but shot 186 and 202 over the next two games to drop down the standings. Before the final match against the PBA Hall of Famer Weber, he grabbed a new ball and took a risk.

“I grabbed an Elite Green Alien and just told myself to throw the ball as slow as I could and throw it to the right,” Smith (Captain Cook, Hawaii) said. “I was taking a stab and it ended up being one of the best moves I made all week. I’m just overwhelmed.”

Smith missed almost the entire 2006-07 season, deferring his exemption due to a hip and back injury. He is making his first championship round appearance since the Dydo Japan Cup 2006 to open the 2006-07 season.

In addition to Smith’s big jump, the wild position round saw Chris Barnes move up to the No. 2 spot with a 237-182 win over Brad Angelo. Barnes’ roommate, Mika Koivuniemi, dropped to the No. 3 seed, finishing with an 11-7 record. Koivuniemi defeated Ritchie Allen in the No. 1 vs. No. 2 match, which forced Allen from the top spot down to No. 4 after the 214-194 loss. Koivuniemi, a Finland native, is making his third championship round appearance in the first six events and will look to become the first two-time winner this season after taking the season-opening Dydo Japan Cup.

Earning the No. 5 seed was Angelo, who finished with a 12-6 record. Angelo will face Allen in the first match of the stepladder finals on Sunday. Like Smith, Allen – who had the best record of the day at 14-4 – also missed the 2006-07 season due to a hand injury. He’ll look for his third career title while Angelo is seeking his first.

The winner of the first match will face Koivuniemi, with that winner advancing to face Barnes. The eight-time titlist advanced to the finals for the third consecutive week but is still looking for his first win of the season.

Have you seen him throw a back-up ball? He throws it just as hard as his regular shot! It's crazy!

It's amazing Osku can do that. he has a shot no matter what is on the right or left side. Instead of switching balls he switch's sides. Takes alot of talent to do something like that and I give him all the credit in the world

Maximum Bob can still throw the ball around 30 mph, dont try that at home unless you have an ambulance waiting !

That shot by Osku is very close to 30 if not 30.

That shot from Osku was at least 30mph

I have a friend who can throw around 30 for his regular strike shot on dry lanes, lets just say the pocket is very big then

Yea, 30 is not that huge of a number a few of my friends who pitch can throw 30 with a house ball and I can throw 26 with 1 hand and just hardly 20 with 2.

I can hit 30 regularly when I start to put a little muscle into it (right as the swing is dropping you put a little force in it, and you throw so much harder, hard to throw extremely hard with a free swing)

30 really isnt too crazy, 30 is crazy when its your strike shot, it would be crazy if someone could throw 30 on a fresh shot and still hook the ball though

well call me doubtful, but I would love to see any of you throw 30 mph ! If you are going by the lane meters, I highly doubt that they are right. Most of them I see are way off and never get calibrated. Go to a cats and see if you can throw that hard. I think you will be surprised ! But far be it from me to say you cant ! LOL

i know i cant... fastest recorded speed i have thrown is 39.99km/h, which is in MPH = 24.84863... free swing... plastic ball... no added rotation(finger is what i mean)...... my normal shot... depending on lane conditions is normally around 28 km/h

I usually throw about 14 to 15 mph and my fastest ever was about 20 mph. Its all in the timing I know, but 30 ! WOW !

the lane machines are in the same range everytime, but they are off by a few MPH, last time I had my speed timed was when I had a storm ball (2nd ball ever, was misled lol) and I threw that 32 according to the lane thing, yes pins fly.

Also....I'm no small guy if you look at my vid, I'm 6 foot give or take an inch and about 179 pounds. If I ever get the chance to get a CATS reading, I'll be sure to try for 30.

Well, I am 6'1" and I weigh 185, and there is no way any of you throw the ball 30 or 30 + ! Sorry

idlehourlegend

Believe me Im 5'8" about 145lbs and I can throw 24 with 1 hand so I dont think 30 for a big guy should be that hard. and I have seen people do it.

whatever, its all about getting the ball off clean really...thats the hardest part...oh and not throwing it in the gutter when you are trying to throw that hard.
