This is not meant to offend. The best bowler in our league is 350 pounds, allot of large men and women in our league can really kick ars. Just curious what percentage of hammer heads fall into this category?
If your not sure if your fat these websites have good health information on body mass indexing:

BMIs are crap.
Nearly every player in the NFL is "morbidly obese" according to it. It takes no account into any muscle weight, actual fat percentage, etc. Its just a lousy ratio of weight vs. height.
Sorry about the rant, as a "morbidly obese" person  I find it rediculous that insurance companies and even employers are looking at this kind of stuff and not getting the real facts and data.

I hear ya, but I need to drop whatever weight I can (my balance was better when I weighed 210 as opposed to 290 - I'm 5' 10"). Being diabetic doesn't help either

How does being diabetic effect your balance? :]

Not directly - Just saying that because I'm diabetic, I need to lose the weight - I loss the weight, I have better balance (and my sugars are in much better control).

I agree, BMIs don't mean anything as they don't take into account the amount of muscle mass compared to the percent of body fat. There is a huge difference between BMIs and actually being overweight or obese.

Big Dog - There is a cool article about type 2 diabetes here:

You are correct, healthy living with a good diet and exercise has many benefits. Three years ago I was told I would need medication for high cholesterol, but through diet and exercise, I've lowered my Cholesterol 33% and am now at normal levels. Plus the bowling feels good. :)

i'm right on 25...gained 10 pounds when I went down from surgery...need to start working out again, I'm hurting so much from just weather outside to work out though, so tired...I could tell it was gonna snow and sleet here today, woke up and my leg felt like it was splitting from the side :(
Anyone have any tips for starting the turn on the ball earlier for me? I turn too late and its killing my revs. Also....I would like to know how to increase speed better...I have a free swing, I dont throw that hard really, when I put the ball over my head and let it drop I throw 25 or so, I have to muscle it to get higher, also a complete free swing makes you feel like you are going to fall over after a while when the momentum gets really great, I'd like to know if I can do anything about this too.

Blisters, how long have you been working on your free swing? I know that when I started mine, I lost some revs just because of getting used to it, but honestly, now, just about a year after starting working with it, I have actually added revs and I am close to that of Tommy Jones, around 500. I know what it feels like to getting off balance in your backswing when you are just working on it, but there a couple things that you can do to help your balance.
1) Lose the 10 pounds that you gained from being down from surgery. You can always lose more then that if you feel that you need to.
2) Work your core muscles if possible, i.e. abs and obliques. Getting both of these stronger will allow you a more solid position at the line, something we all desire.

Its not even that much of a balance at the line, its when I'm throwing harder with the free swing, I've been working on it for about...9 months now. I just cant get used to the swing getting so damned high when I raise the ball, plus I lean foreward some and that really doesnt help

I'm dead on 6 feet and weigh 227lb. My BMI came out as a shade over 30 so I'm classed as obese  Just for reference I worked what weight the calculator thought I ought to be so as I would be in the "normal" range and it came out to 180lb.
Last time I was 180lb was around 20 years ago when I had been fighting a viral infection for over 6 months. I looked bloody awful and none of my clothes fitted me.
I agree with other posters here regarding BMI's. I think they're crap. Everyone is different and trying to categorise us all into 4 BMI ranges is absurd.

I'm 6 ft. and 270ish lbs. I am a bit husky, but alot of my weight comes from lots of muscle mass. Thats according to my doctor when i had my physical a few months ago. According to the BMI thing, i would be over 30 and considered very obese, but i'm at 13% body fat.

I call myself fat all the time and it pisses my wife off. In clinical terms at my last DOT physical I was obese.
Everybody is different we all know that. It kind of sucked to think about it for a minute but then I realized....the good Lord didn't make me to be 175 lbs. As it is, if I only weighed that much I would get blown over by a stiff wind. I can't help it that my bone structure is bigger than normal, oh yea I could diffinately stand to get rid of some of that beer gut. Who cares. I like beer and pizza.
I'm not fat, I'm PHAT: Pretty Hot And Tempting

I'm 5'8", 190. I guess I'm a little overweight, but a little on the muscular side, so not too bad. I can still wear an XL shirt comfortably. I'm gonna force myself to go jogging again so I can get back down to 180. My size 34 shorts are starting to get a little on the tight side! :D

You have 2" on my height and weigh 100lbs more. Damn that's a lot of muscle mass. I bet you can loft the ball all the way to the pins. I'm 5'10", weigh 170, and have 20% body fat. Damn gut.

These things are the reason why smokin' hot stars like Jessica Alba look emaciated now.
They take out all of the factors such as build and muscle mass.
Let's face it unless you look like an emaciated toothpick you are overweight or Obese.

You totally hit the nail on the head there. These things are the reason why so many people are developing eating disorders. They are pointless things to say that if you are 6 ft and you don't weigh between 140 and 180 you are a fat bastard... There isn't a point in any of these things.

I appreciate everyones input. This was a private poll as weight can be a touchy subject. I recently went through some life style changes to address some personal health issues and had to start to paying attention to this kind of thing.
While I agree these test aren't 100% accurate, keep in mined North America is more obese that it's ever been this stems from an increase in fast food and pre-produced food as well as a more automated life style (heck we don't even need to do math when we bowl any more). You can give your self as many excuses as you need to feel better, but bottom line is you know what you eat and how you live. Being healthy isn't just a BMI, it's eating well and exercising. But if any of the web site's I've listed help just one person pay more attention to their health then this post is worth it. I'm not judging or preaching, I'm taking measures for my self to bowl longer and be around for my kids. I don't mind others doing what suites them best, but I wouldn't be so quick to discount everything.
It's your life and your body, ultimately you have to roll with it. (but every once and a while we may need a little resurfacing...)

All in all, the website basic calculations of BMI might be off, if you truely want to know an accurate BMI get it tested from a doctor (of you can try one of those hand held at home units).
Muscle mass can come into a large play for some people, but generally Can-Ham is right. The United States rate of obesity is in a continual growth unfortanetly. A large part of this is exactly what can-ham has stated about fast food and pre processed food products that are very large part of our every day lifes.

Can, I'm amazed you would even put that crap in here. The BMI is soooo lousy most of the Doctors I go to have stopped using it. Unless you're in the terminal stages of anorexia or have some of those six pack abs that thing will tell you you're Obese. Some life insurance weenie came up with that thing. So now people who thought they were okay body-wise now are walking around feeling like doo-doo because some chart says they're fat. Big deal. You is what you is. Eat when you're hungry, don't overeat and get some exercise like bowling two or three times a week. The stress from charts like those will kill you faster than a few extra pounds from that cheeseburger you ate before your league started.

As Rowdy said you are what you eat and we're all corn! Not trying to be preachy here but for the few of you who care about your health this is a great eye opener.

It's misleading, because according to all of those sites, I am obese.
I'm 5'8" and weigh about 225lbs. I do have a gut, but I am not "fat". I am also very muscular in my legs and arms (I could definitely lose 25 to 30 lbs.), but anyway, I will say I'm overweight since I do want to lose another 25 lbs.
BTW...I voted obese even though as stated, I believe to be overweight only.

I'm 6'0" and weigh between 250-260 and according to everything I've read, I believe I would be classified as obese; but I don't feel that way. ;)
With summer coming, I'm planning on riding my bike (bicycle not motor) and that helps me loose weight and it helps my bowling by strenghtening my legs.
