Hello, I just have a question for all of you.

My little brother has been bowling for around 2 years and I'm going to get him a ball for his birthday coming up in late January. He averages around 130 throwing mostly my old Zones that I don't use anymore and a plastic 14lb ball. He doesn't throw much hook, but wants to learn how. So I was wondering, which ball should I get for him as I help him learn to hook the ball? I was probably going to get him a Vibe, but just wanted to get the opinions of others who know more than I do before I decide.

If you need any other info just let me know.

Either a Cherry Vibe or an Anger. If you think he'll outgrow the Vibe too soon, and I do,go with the Anger. He can change the layout in it as he gets better. More bang for the buck.

The Blue Vibe will be stronger than the Cherry Vibe.

He can still use the old Zones to throw a hook. It's more important that the ball be fitted and drilled properly more than anything. But if a new ball is what is really wanted, then I would suggest the least expensive entry level ball you can pick up.

Yeah, I probably worded my first post wrong, I've already been teaching him how to hook the ball, but still want to get him a new ball for his birthday. Just was wondering if it was better to get him a more "entry level" ball while he is first learning other than a ball that might hook too much for him.

To Rowdy: What layout should I start him out with if I get him the Anger? Just a standard one?

Some real good entry level balls would be the Cherry Vibe / Blue Vibe and the Ebonite Tornados . The CV provides good length with enough backend and the BV will move on the backend a little more than the CV. These are for light to med conditions.

The Tornados have a reactive resin cover and provides a good backend reaction. If he is more than an entry level bowler, you could get him the Anger and I would get it drilled with a controllable hook such as the #1 or #3 layout depending on his ball speed and conditions (med-heavy oil).

Keep in mind thought that a ball with a moderate hook rating is good for the entry level bowler. Once he has learned to hook it, a more aggressive ball may be appropriate.

While big hooks generate more power, it is important to note that, generally, the bigger the hook is, the more difficult it will be for a begginer to control. Find a happy medium that he will feel comfortable with and doesn't compromise balance or swing. Then you can fine tune his shot to add hook or cut back on it, depending on lane conditions.

Get him a tornado, vibe, or a doom. These should be the most controllable balls for him.
