Hey guys,
I just started bowling about 3 months ago and I love it! I'm just starting to bowl using a hooking ball a friend lent me. Anyone have any advice or links for a new bowler? I just bought a black widow but I'm still waiting for it to ship to my house. Thanks for any and all advice.

practice-practice-practice.
A black widow is a strong hooking ball for a new bowler, good luck with it, they are awesome. Look forward to seeing you in the high score section soon.

Me in the high scores? hahaha... that won't be for a while... This Monday when I went bowling. (I'm using a friend's hook ball) I bowled a 139... I had 4 splits that game. I have a long road ahead of me...

i dont suggest using a black widow yet. practice your form first then make your shot consistent. then you'll know how to drill the black widow.

Thanks for the tip. I'll work on my control for now with the hooking ball my friend's lent me.

while I do agree with the practice issue, I myself would say f@ck it and punch up the Widow and practice with the ball I was gonna be rollin with.

Like everyone else said, practice. Practice as many games as you possibly can and while practicing, dont worry about shooting high scores, look for your mark, work on your follow through and stance. In bowling, you can never have too much practice. Good luck with the black widow.

I was really looking forward to drilling it up and I guess I will now. :D
Thanks a lot for everyone's help. I really need to work on my basics. My follow through is always bad... Are there any common mistakes you see people make when they start bowling? Something I should keep in mind? Thanks again.

What I would suggest honestly is going to your public library and reading what you can when you are just starting out.

I agree, practice with the Black Widow, learn what it will do for you. The more you practice with any ball the more comfortable you become, then you start to trust the reaction and next thing you know........

I was at a book store looking for a book to buy but it seemed really basic. Any one have any book titles that they can recommend?

I'd say watch other bowlers in your league that you think are good...see how they're releasing the ball...and then really concentrate on how you release the ball. Think about how you want to lay the ball down and what position it's in when it leaves your hand.
I used to think about it all the time (even away from the alley).
Worrying about marks and position is rather easy after you get a consistant release down.
My 2 cents...

Almost any book by Fred Borden should be a great help.
Years back, I used a video by Frankie May about bowling basics. It was a big help when I was stuck trying to improve my 180 avg.
Try Frankie May's web site: www.maysbowlingandbillards.com

Why spend money at the book store? Go to your public library sign out as many as you want (books and videos)! There was a really helpful video by PBA Hall of famer Marshall Holman, this was a long time ago. Why not try there first, then if you find something you really want, then you could go buy it.

Since I moved to a different city I don't even know where the libary is... I'll have to look it up. And I'm pretty forgetful... so damn late charges always get me... I'll have to ask my friends to see if they might pick up a few books for me...
Thanks for the tips everyone.
