View Full Version : what should i add to my arsenal?
right now i have a nmb, bws, and a cv. im getting rid of the cv, and i want to get a ball that will fit in nicely under the nmb and black widow. im not sure if i wanna go with something like a bwp or a toxic or doom. can someone with these balls let me know what they think? what i need is something for when the lanes start to break down and i want to switch to something weaker...
thanks

i personally wouldnt go with the bwp, if your lookin to replace for a similar ball. bwp is much stronger than what your wantin to get rid of. thats just my opinion my friend. maybe check out somethin in the raw series of balls.

Well, I am not sure why you got rid of the CV, seems it would have fit perfect behind them. If it was too strong, try a blue Vibe with a 5 1/2 to 6 in pin and about 1/2 in under the middle finger. That will give you a nice controlled dry lane ball and then polish it more` than it is
i didnt get rid of it yet, but i just got it polished and its still as strong if not stronger than my other balls, so its kinda pointless keeping it if i need a ball to switch to as the night goes on... i just want something thats a small step down. if its really dry i can use my tornado.

Dado,
I've been having the same problem. As soon as the ball hits dry, it jumps. Hard.
But I tried something alittle different tonight. Using my noggin I thought bout this and said to myself "if it likes to move on dry how can I keep it in the oil? So instead of swinging to the 5 board like I normally do, I stood (inside of left food - right handed bowler) on the 23, threw to the 13, and the ball never quite left the oil (never got outside of the 10). It slid real far, and when it snapped it did so right into the pocket.
This does seem to be a light oil ball, but not a no oil ball.
So for those conditions I've got a Classic Black Urethane and a Berry Razor (first generation Resin).
i see what you mean, but on oily conditions i dont see why it out hooks every high end ball i have... anyway im looking for something i can use on the same line, if thats possible, as my high end balls.

How far out does the ball go on your ideal line?
my absolute favorite line to play is about 10 at the arrows out to about 4 at the breakpoint. it always works with the widow and nmb, but no way with the cv...

Nope. That's way too much dry for the VIBE. You'd have to play over the 16-17 and out to 10 to make that work.

If you haven't put a balance hole in your CV yet do it. I was having the same problem and after I put the balance hole in it, it tamed down a lot. What I've also found is that I have to play outside of the normal track area in my lanes. Either go out side of the track or inside. I can do both with mine. I was almost to the point of getting rid of my CV as well now I love the ball and it is my new benchmark ball at my normal house.
theres no way to use it outside, and it does have a balance hole...

The Cherry Vibe is sneaky strong. I'd say go with another one, with really weak layout on it.

id say a toxic...i personally absolutely love the anger and toxic and i think the toxic would fit just fine under the black widow and your NMB how are they drilled?
HAH, no way am i buying another cherry vibe... ive thought about redrilling this one but im just not sure.
im thinking about an anger, because it would really help me when it actually matters. only once have i needed a ball weaker than the widow in a match, and that was because the alley decided they didnt wanna oil the lanes that day... although im sure a toxic will be nice to have as a small step down.
we'll see what i can afford :)

Knock the polish off the ball and see how it handles.
What is the ball drilled like? What is the PtoP. Where you looking for skid-flip reaction when you got the ball. What kinda of track do you have low, medium or high.

For someone who has neither ball it's interesting to see the CV being graded as more aggressive than the Toxic. I had it in mind that it was the other way around :o
it is drilled with the pin above the ring and the cg is out to the right a bit. i have medium revs and i have a very high track.

Find you PAP, then find out what all of your balls drilled like for you.
PtoP is the most important factor when determining how a ball is drilled.
Second would be the MB or HART.
Then weight holes.
(Not saying these factors are the most impoertant things for bowling ball, but these are the three most important factors in determining a drilling for you.)
Because what works for me, will not be the same for you. As I'm sure we don't share the same PAP.
Personally, right now I believe the number one thing for good bowling is a good fitting bowling ball.

Dado,
Go with a Doom. Pin over the bridge with the cg in the right part of the "safe zone" near the center of your grip.
But before you actually get rid of it, have you actually ever tried changing the surface of the CV? Possibly taking it to about 4000 no polish. That might get the ball to start up, but not burn up when it hits the dry. It will make it a little more sensitive to the dry boards outside, but if you are having trouble getting it to start up when you get it out there then that might be what you would be looking at.

Dado,
I bowl in a second shift league on Tuesday nights and quite often the lanes are torched by the mid point of the first game. I bought a Blue Vibe a while back and had it drilled to go a little longer than my Pain and Toxic.
I was sure that the BV was going to be the answer for dry lanes but I found out that even the BV is too strong for really dry lanes.
So, recently I've been asking around; talking to our pro, our lane manager, and some really good bowlers that I know. They all agree that there really is no ball that is really good on really dry lanes. In fact, they suggested that I might want a spare ball with a pancake block, like the Tuff. I think the Big Blue Spare also has a block in it.
The way they explained it is that pretty much all balls (other than plastic) have weight blocks that are rather large in them and that is why the balls hook so much on dry lanes.
The answer (I think) is to learn how to play on dry. Learn how to use the oil that is in the middle and to play an inside line. I've been working on it in practice when the lanes are dry and it is helping my game because I'm learning how to play on different lines. It's all about finding your spot and hitting it with the right speed, and right ball.
I'd keep the CV and learn how to use it because it is still weaker than anything else you can buy from Hammer. If you think your CV hooks too much, a Toxic or Doom will hook even more.
I hope this helps some.
im not using it on dry lanes, i have a tornado warning for that. i just wanted something to switch to after the no mercy and be able to play a similar part of the lane.

Well, a pearl ball would be the logical choice but you already have a CV. I wouldn't think a CV is too strong for medium or spotty lanes.
I usually start with Pain or Anger, then go to Toxic as the lanes transition, and sometimes BV when they dry out.
ok, so i finally got the cv to work. but it plays the same line as my widow... anyway im thinking of getting an anger b/c i dont have anything for really heavy oil at the moment and i need something. unless anyone has any better suggestions on a better heavy oil ball...
