I just got a new Anger and can't decide which layout to use. I got the ball to use at nationals, state and local tournaments where there is heavy to medium oil. The house shot where I bowl is light oil on a short pattern, so I don,t get much chance to practice on a oily condition. I have a high ball track, med speed and med revs. I would like to be able to play 17 board out to 8 in heavy oil, which drill pattern would be the best #1 or #3 and are there any small changes to those layouts to help performance.

First off, the Anger is a great ball and I think you made a good choice.
I would go with #1 or #3.
I am a high track, med to high rev rate, med to high speed. My Anger is 3 3/8 pin to pap, basically the #3 layout. Could you list the other equipment you have and give us the drill patterns on those? That way we could make a proper suggestion.
Remember Nationals patterns are sport shots. You'll want something that rolls off the end of the pattern and controllable at the breakpoint, while still being aggressive in the oil.

Standard layout? What is that, pin above the fingers or something?

I would agree that the 3 3/8" stacked leverage layout would suit best for heavier/longer oil. My new one has that drilling, and gives my SCB at 500 abralon a run for it's money, and my Anger is at 2000 OOB.

I'd stack it up and enjoy. You can always change the surface to 4000 or polish to tame it down some.

mine is....
Pin 4 inches from pap and cg 3 1/2 from pap. This is considered a strong layout.

I have mine with the Length with agressive backend and the ball just eats the oil. I can go 15-5 or 20-10 and get the push into the pocket. I have no problem with this layout . #1 0r #3 layout will be just fine. My pin is 4 1/2 from PAP and Cg is just right (1/4") of center grip .

If you are going to use the ball for heavier oil like at the USBC tournament or other tournaments where the pattern is 40 plus feet, there is not a lot of room for hook. Balls do not hook in oil anyway. Set up a ball that will roll early but not over react on the back end. A pin to pap of 1 1/2" to 2" with the pin located right of the fingers. This is an early roll layout (Label) drill.
If you like stacked leverage balls, One to consider would be a 2" to 3" pin from your pap. Again the pin & cg will be right of your fingers. Adjust surface as necessary to match your rev rate & speed.
On longer patterns, straighter is greater. You will be playing inside around the 3rd to 4th arrow and not letting the ball get out past 12.
Hook is for show, straight is for dough.

17 to 8 in heavy oil is called either a gutterball or "Dude, you only hit the 10 pin." Depends on the revs. Stamply and Trio are right.
