Couldn't bowl last night due to an injury so I had a look round the pro shop. Saw a 15lb Pain sitting on the shelf. "Hmm" I thought. "Discontinued ball. I wonder how much" just out of interest of course ;)

Mongo, It might be a toss up between the one you were at and the one at the house where I bowl . Same thing. They have balls in thier case for example, a Grove, for $189.00 US. Their stuff is three years old and they want $200 for some stuffe like a Tropical Storm.

dont get too upset, i purposely mislead you on that... i work at the bowling alley part time so i get employee discounts. drilling and all that free, surface adjustments and i think resurfacing free, and i can buy new balls at whatever price they pay to get them

Well it kind of is. I do know people who can get a ball like the BWS for $120, and pay $30 for drilling and leave paying only $150 where I pay $230 for the same ball, and they do not work at a bowling ally. I know its not 2 for 1, but saving $80 is like 1.5 for the price of 1.

Oh believe me I don't and it seems no one else is neither. This is the same house that the owner said he would rather have the lanes empty than give league bowler a break on the price of bowling.

That is entirely WAAAAAAAAAY too much for a bowling ball, especially in a mid-level price line. I will say that the Pain is a great and very under-rated bowling ball.
I'm still considering buying another one for when mine gets tracked out. So far, it's my favorite ball. The BWB may overtake it but I haven't used it enough yet to find out. So far, the Pain is king.

one of the houses where i bowl in has the bite for sale $229 then add $40 for drilling, lifters and thumb $269. Not for me...Everything comes off buddiesproshop.com my bite was $135 i think and i take them to a good friend of mine who drills them for $20 so i have $155 into each of my balls

you'd think that with all the bowling balls everyone buys the prices would lower, but they don't. it must be because a lot of people buy off the internet instead of the pro shops. my pro shop wants $189.00 for a bwb drilled includes inserts and slug and i think $120 for a tropical storm. i wonder if the prices of bowling balls have a big affect on whether or not a person (new to bowling) wants to get serious about their game and buy a good ball?

i think price has alot to do with it i have 2 scenarios. My buddy and i traded a Columbia action for a Total NV me getting the Total NV. now we didnt have to touch much because our spans etc are close. I practiced with the ball threw games over 240 but just wasnt consistent didnt like the roll. Now i didnt want to put the money into that ball to get it redrilled (partly because i new i was going to buy the BITE:) (way better ball in my opion) So i turn around and give the ball to one of my other buddies. hes got some decent equipment (few years old) but i gave him this ball and its just what his game needed shot a bunch of 700s, 300, 289. He was lucky i was nice enough to give him the ball cuz he really didnt have the money for a new one.
Scenarios 2: My sister. My dad bought her the AMF dick weber legacy-c for xmas about 3 years ago, this is when she started throwing a hook. good first ball for learning. Now when i bought my Smokin inferno i was nice and bought her one for xmas too. She avged 185 with it shooting alot of 600s and 2 700s 716 and 765. That ball got chewed up in the ball return and they drilled her up an Ebonite Angular One she just posted 764 with that.
Now after all that rambling sorry guys, my point is that there are alot of bowlers with potential to be alot better, but if they dont have the money or dont want to spend it on bowling balls cuz of there price.

When you consider that a set of Pings goes for over $1500,a couple of hundered bucks for a bowling ball is one hell of a deal. Hey,if you don't want to get off your wallet, don't expect to have the latest gear. But with proper care the bowling ball will last years, but the Pings will be obsolete before you make the turn of your first round.

im stilling hitting a set of tommy armour 845s i bought 12 years ago, and still hitting them very well, and the clubs are still in great condition...high 30s low 40s every round, so i think bowling ball technology changes faster than golf clubs, plus there are more conditions in golf, weather, balls..etc...i think it all comes down to ability...give someone good an old set of clubs they can still hit them, probably the same with bowling, just would have to change your game a bit more

I'm using a set of knock off cavity back irons that Tink bought me when we took a weekend off in Tennessee years ago. None of the woods match and I've got the oldest sand wedge going. But I shoot low 80's on the card,no handicap, from the white tees with them. Pisses off a friend of mine who just bought a new set of Callaways and can't break 100 with them.

Hold on Hoss - that contradicts what you said in
http://forums.hammerbowling.com/showthread.php?t=7072 There's a reason all those balls are for sale. They all are outdated technology. If you want to drop some weight, fine. But shop around for a used ball that will give you something to work with.
How does a old golf club technology not out-date so much as a three year old bowling ball?
Anyway how come you play golf? I thought you had a buggered back.

if AUD to USD is anywhere close, then Yes, congrats you have the most expensive proshop ever. The Pain is worth bout 160 with drilling lol....(in USD of course, I'm not well versed in international currency other than USD to Euro and vise versa)
Edit: Nevermind, thanks Brett.

I'm missing the contradiction.
Golf clubs have pretty much topped out in technology,as far as a NON Pro is concerned. The cavity back irons I have are plenty good enough for me.
I wasn't commenting on ALL three year old bowling balls. Some BW's are three years old and that technology is still working fine.
I was commenting on the two examples of balls that were given. Both balls were snoozers when new and time hasn't brought anything to light that will improve them.
I play golf when my back will let me. After my first back operation, they had me swinging a five pound ball in a small golf swing motion to break up scar tissue. I figured what the hell and went golfing instead of to phsyical therapy. More fun. That fusion healed nicely and I went back to work. Eight years later the disc below that one let go. I bent over to pick up a hose that should have been empty and weigh 40 pounds, tops. Instead it was half full of cement powder and weighed over 600 pounds!
But my back cutter heartily recommends bowling to rehab the back.:) Guess who hasn't been to physical therapy at all this time?

The contradiction is that you poo-poohed "out of date technology" as far as the balls I mentioned are concerned yet you are quite happy to decapitate worms with an out of date 7-iron.
