View Full Version : A small idea...

Well just an idea i had..

There seems to be a bit of spam around here lately, seems there is a small increase in it too. My thought is why not have a Mod for each seperate forum. I mean, Bubba does a great job, but he is only one person and can not be around here all the time. Also, the main purpose to add someone as a mod to each forum would to keep the spam out..but of course other duties.

Now i know none of us can really do much, and as far as i know, Bubba cant add Mods, but maybe the folks over at Hammer will see this small thread here, and consider it.

Also, id say if this were to be done, the people who are most active and wouldnt abuse it should be asked

Any thoughts?

I am surprised the forums have only 1 mod, this may be the first forum I have ever seen that is this way. Especially since it is a company forum, seems strange to have a SINGLE staff member for it.

I run websites, have owned successful forums, etc and I always have 1 staff member for every 100-200 members to do clean up duties.

we really only have about 40 active members though and i would say that is a high estimate, most people here only read and dont post.

That being said all the spam could be taken care of with adding the step in registration that the spam bots cant do.

Adding CAPTCHA in the registration process would help immensely (maybe even 2 levels of CAPTCHA... it's becoming common).

As far as more mods... I say no. We have 1 and 1 is fine considering the small amount of active posters on the forums.

If you see a spam just click the triangle in the top right corner of the post. this will report it, most likely to Bubba, then he won't have to go hunting for it...

There has been a huge increase of spam here and the track forum, putting 2 of those security boxes in registration would help a ton.

There are also mods called 'human' checks that ask questions like "What is the product 2 + 2", etc. Those are good checks for 2 reasons:

1) They get rid of bots

2) They get rid of people who can't do basic addition

Just in case, I would volunteer to be another forum moderator. :)

So maybe this thread should be turned into a "how can we stop the spam" thread

In reality all the spam seems to be in the middle of the night or the early morning rush hour when everyone is on their way to work. As soon as I log on I check for spam and get rid of it.. And THANK YOU to those of you who report the spam. This sends an email to all Mods and Admins.

I have requested about the CAPTCHA but it seems it is not needed. No one can be on all the time. I have tried to keep it to a minimum.

Also there is one Mod and two Admins.

it's not that bad and it's pretty obvious when spam pops up on here. just don't click on it. adding the captcha would help. Bubbaray is doing a fine job by himself.

I have passed the word along to the Admin about adding the CAPTCHA to the registration process. I will let everyone know what transpires.

Thanks goes out to everyone here for being concerend and the kind words.

Thanks for doing that. Its a tad uncomfortable when I click New Posts during a lecture on campus and a p0rn topic is on top of the list, I don't want to know what people around me think.

The problem is, when these bots register, they preset a time for the post to show. They may register at 10:00am and set the post to show at lunch time. It's real hard to keep en eye open every second of the day and night. I do my best to get rid of them when I am at work.

There are bots that can beat captcha systems, thats why modern day effective captchas are even hard for humans to decypher.

o in essence there is no real solution to the problem as of yet. There could be 50 Mods here and I can safely say, even with that many, spam will get through .

well no

there is one way

setting on the admin forum control panel, admin/s have to approve the user before they can post.... no i swear there is a setting on the control panel like it, and make it a rule that you gotta have your name on in profile, so yous know its a real person...

There is, I believe it is standard in vBulletin. Ball reviews has that system in place and they are in good shape.

actually when I go into the control panel, the setting is already set to approve members in email. I have banne over 200 names since being appointed. I can tell ahead of time what is going to be spam just by the members name:confused:
