When throwing a hook is your thumb suppose to be pointed straight ahead towards the pins or facing towards the sky?

everyone is different, you just have to experiment and find out what works best for you. having someone watch you bowl is also a good idea as they can tell you what you're doing. being consistant is the big key.

Releasing a bowling ball is like throwing a spiral football underhanded. Just let the roll of your hand at the point of release and you'll be fine. Just relax and don't get too mechanical with your delivery. The less complicated your delivery is the easier it is to be consistent. The direction of the thumb is dictated by how much axis tilt is desired.

From what I've been coached, look at Pete Weber's follow through, picture perfect, open palm with the thumb just up, showing no grip in the downswing.

Whichever suits your style is fine. If you have a more leveraged release, a late release or want to crank up the revs, your thumb would be pointed more towards the middle of the lane.
