View Full Version : Find a coach?
I have a very unique bowling style it is a Slow approach with out much bend. Almost no back swing kinda like the ultimate cranker. I bowl with my thumb in and can get sppeds up to 18 mph with very high revs. I dont know how I started bowling like this but its how I feel comfortable. When I aproach I am right handed and start in the left gutter I throw for the thrid right arrow and it runs down the gutter then breaks. I have been experimenting with flatening out my arch to be able to move right when lanes change. I have been looking for a coach but it seems to me that they all want to change your style to fit their way? Is that common? I have been bowling for a little over 2 months and have bowl 3 high scores of 177 but would say an average of around 140-150. So should I change and start bowling like everyone or keep trying to find a coach that will adjust to my style? I have tried to bowl with a full swing and comon style and it just aint gonna work. (car accident broke both hips awhile ago)

Find a reliable coach and explain to him that you've tried and it didn't work. He might try again but with better tactics but u might want to think about changing if you're only averaging 140-150. You also need to work on spares if your high game is only 177.

Check with the ecnter that you bowling as see if they know f any certified coaches. If they don't know of any do a search for bowling coaches in your area. When you find one have him evaluate your style. He will be able to decifer what to change in your style and one thing is do not be affraid to try anything he might recommend..

Ok update my average has gone up to 160 now I feel this is pretty good for the amount time I have bowled and last night left only 2 open frames for a 169. The other day I was approached by these two younger guys that bowl in our center. They average in the 220's. They started talking to me and offered to coach me. I check with the center and they checked out. They actualy both just got their PBA cards and are trying to get silver certified? The next day I saw them again and they set up a time to start today at 2:30.
Now I would like advice on how much of my game do I give to my coaches they have already made the statement on opening up my swing and working on my approach. That is a give me and I expected that. Then they also said that I would most likley not be using my regular balls untill I learn get accustom to my new swing? I know I have a lot to learn and will improve but how far do you throw your self at the mercy of your coaches? If they sugest to bowl left handed? Wear a dress? give up bowling? OK that was over the top but you get my point. Let me know what you guys think and some of you coaches let me know what you expect. Thanks Keith

Never be afraid to try something new. You never know when that will be the one thing that really bumps up the old average. My swing is my own,I take a little from watching this pro and that pro, plus what I've read and tried in practice. Add it all together, stir in some gear thats drilled right and presto!
Just remember that any changes you make to your swing will take time to show benefits. It will require you to be brutally honest with yourself. Most bowlers want an "instant fix". There ain't none. This is WORK. Hard work. Lots and lots of lane time, throw a ball, evaluate what you did and what happened with the shot and then do it all over again. This isn't grab a ball and chuck it over and over,as fast as you can. When I work on something it may take me up to 10 minutes between shots. I'll have a ball in my hand and try to groove the move I'm trying to make using practice swings. Then I'll throw the ball and see what happens.
Give it a try with these guys and see what happens.
Wow worked with both of them Sat. Yes they got this major cranker to bowl with a straight arm swing and it stayed on the lane with descent reaction spped and accurecy. I am more comfortable the other way but that will change with muscle memory. Today I improve my Spare shooting up to 85% of attempts. I bowled a non practice game using both styles and scored 181 which is my highest score beat a 3 time 177. We went over alot of where to shoot spares from so the recent success is from the coaching.
I am continuing my lessons with them and see where it takes me. Even if I dont completly change my style I have already evolved my style even after one lesson. So I would recomend anyone to take lessons. Thanks for the encouragment.
