Bowled in the May MJBT on Sunday which was held in Moundsview, Minnesota, on the north side of the Twin Cities.

Previous year we bowled on the PBA Cheetah pattern. Slightly modified with oil volume I believe. The cut was pretty low that year at only +50 or so. This year I knew I was going to be expecting some sort of sport pattern, but man was I surprised on what we were put up against on Sunday. There were rumors of both the Scorpion pattern or the US Open pattern. Well, both were wrong. We ended up bowling on the USBC Nationals shot from this year in Alb., NM. What a treat!

I was placed 2nd after the first 5-game block at +70. I was using a weakly drilled Black Widow Solid with the pin to PAP distance at 6 inches and the MB distance being 4 inches. I was mainly rolling standing on 20, keeping a firm release with the lower side of the revs for me, at the arrows the ball was at about 15 and the breakpoint was at about 8-6. The outside started really opening up around game 3-7. During the second 4-game block I was struggling getting the carry. I was in the pocket, but there wasn't much more adjusting that I could make without losing my look. I ended up shooting 209, 203, 199, and 171 respectively. The last game (171) I was on the end pair of 31-32. Being the end of the house and near the door, the pair played different than the rest, and they even had a different look then each other. I finished out at +52 and dropping to 6th place. I still qualified through to match play as they take the top 8, this for the third tournament in a row.

During match play I started off playing deep over the 4th arrow, mainly with the same release as qualifying. I was rolling the same Black Widow Solid through the first 3 games of match play, winning the first two and losing the last one. During the last one, my line totally disappeared. I then took out my new Raw Hammer Doom with OOB surface and drilled 5.5 x 4. The polish allowed the ball to get down the lane and the layout didn't allow it to overreact. The pin was placed under my middle finger. Using the Doom, the lanes really opened up and I was able to playing more swing with the same release. At the same time, I was forced even deeper, playing over the 5th arrow. Through the first 4 games of match play I went 2-2. We kept things moving and I ended up finishing out 4-4 overall in matchplay. I was +146 in match play, and that put me in the second place spot. In the last game I went up against a good friend, both of us are going for our first MJBT **. My friend had a good 78 pins up on me, so I basically needed to beat him by 49 pins, with the 30 bonus, to take the ** from him. Needless to say, I didn't, but I finished out in second, tied my highest finish yet.

Needless to say it was a very interesting day. On this pattern, I actually had to move right to get the hold down the lane from the carry down before actually having to move left to find more head oil. It was a very definite time when you knew that you had to make a move. I think it was the fact that I actually had to move right. I rarely ever have to move right.

Overall, it was a great day. Finished second and got $255 in scholarship money.
