Alright, so this is my sophomore year at Robert Morris University in PA. Last year, i go to tryouts, bowl 10 games and not do good at all...highes game is 200. So i decide to pass on the team last year because they determine you on your tryouts. So i would be the last last last sub. I didn't regret my decision, beacuse i don't think i was ready to be traveling around on my weekends for tournament.
So the time has come again. I did a PBA league over the summer and my average went down a considerable ammount from the previous year. Should i try out? It costs about $400 over the course of the year to pay for the team. I still don't think i want to be traveling around on my weekends when i like to be realxing.
I am also very happy doing a tuesday night mens league. I enjoy bowling for fun right now, and actually look forward to tuesday nights to go bowl.
What would you do??

yeah you bowl a pba pattern league your average drops 15 to 20 pins on it plus thats most likely the shots you would be bowling on for the tournaments so if you didnt like it and you dont like traveling and dont want to take bowling serious then i would stay away and have fun bowling your league because if you try out and make it you have to dedicate to it and it sounds like to me you dont want too so happy bowling

Yeah, your average went down. All of ours did. But did you check the conversion chart to see what your sport average converts to for a THS league??? There's most, if not all, of your pins back.:)

Well i wouldn't say i don't want to take bowling serious, because i really do. If i do bad, i think of things to fix my problem. I definitly take bowling serious

Deadman, follow what your heart is telling you to do. If you feel this is what you really want to do then do it. If you feel you would rather not travel on weekends for tournaments, then your heart is telling you something. Do what you feel is best for yourself and enjoy doing it.

Follow your gut.
Don't sweat the small stuff.
Remember No Regrets. If you think you could regret not taking this experience, then get on over to tryouts. If you don't make it atleast you tried... I remember last year you where stoked about the experience and
opportunity of bowling for the team. It use to be in your signature as well. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Go try out and whatever ever happens, atleast you know you tried. Have fun, relax, don't sweat, remember to breathe and RELAX! Things happen for a reason.
The only let down in life is not trying, especially when you know you want it. So go for it.
Right now you only decision is whether or not you try out. You have to make the team to have the next decision. Being an alternate would be cool, if you really want to be part of them team. Lots of learning
opportunities with good coaches.

Must not be much of a school if you can't get excited about representing them in an athletic endevour.
In other words: Get off your lazy butt and be true to your school. Go bowl.

Beach boys reference again Rowdy??
I agree here if your going to this school, go bowl for them, it will give you something to look forward to on the weekends every week and gets you free practice, dont sweat the try outs most of the people that are there arent that good, have seen some averages.

well for my junior year, i am doing the team. I went to tryouts last night, i had to go early cause i bowl in a league tuesday nights. The coach had me bowl non stop for 45 min back and forth on a pair of lanes on a burnt up house shot. He just wanted to see my bowl and that was about it. I guess people know who i am? Well they said they would let me know and there was 1 spot open on the 5 man team. I made the team! So for the next 2 years...i am a college bowler!

You need to talk to your coach. You may have forfeited your HS Eligibility by bowling an adult league if there is any prize money, unless it is a singles league and you have had a waiver signed. You may have also forfeited your college eligibility.

Keep up,Dude. We're talking college here. And being given equipment for your sport comes under a whole different set of rules.

pba, from everything ive read since mens bowling isnt NCAA MOST schools really dont care about it, there are still a few schools that do that rule but its very few. and i dont think morris does but i could be wrong.

nope already cleared it up. He said its not a problem. Just can't have a PBA membership which i don't
I gotta practice 50 games a week...i buy a $50 card that is free bowling all year
Coach said to use older equipment so we don't burn up the tournament equipment and practice is mostly muscle memory which i agree. But of course ill throw probably 2 games at least of just 10 pins...can't really burn up a plastic ball haha
but my toxic and bite that i rarely ever use will be getting alot of use in practicing i'm thinking!

My fault, I didn't read the post correctly. I thought we were talking about HS Bowling
Well you have a whoe different set of rules than down here. Back in the day my son lost his eligibility for any HS Sport because he bowled in a money league. According to the state GAHS athletic commission any participation in any sport where money is paid as a prize renders the student ineligible for any HS athletics.
However on the collegiate front. One of my youth bowlers was offered a scholarship to Webber this year. Utimately he decided not to take it due to the cost of tuition at Webber. During the time between graduation and college start we needed a bowler to sub at the USBC Open in Vegas. He contacted the coach (Joe Slowinski) who advised him not to go because he would be ineligible to bowl.

Congrats on making the team. Kinda surprising the team does not have a Sponser for equipment.
Do they allow you to get one?
Do they get discounts on equipment... balls, shoes, bags, etc?

Usually you dont, I gave up my amatuer status when I was 14 to bowl mens leagues because there was no competition in youth leagues around here. Colleges still got in contact with me about scholarships to bowl, not going to mention names. But there was more than a few, they said that its not against a USBC rule as long as its not an NCAA college, which most of the better bowling colleges arent. But some colleges even said they would overlook it and it wouldnt matter.

even if the team does not have a specific sponsor you still get some pretty good discounts. My friend at NIU get's really good discounts on the equipment and gets it drilled whever.
I actually know three RMU bowlers but they are in Illinois. I watched two guys bring 10 balls each to my driller. He had a good week money wise.

Nope. Well maybe we may get a discount cause the coach is the manager of the bowling alley we practice at...so he may give us a break on his pro shop there. But i get my balls drilled from the same guy all my life, so ill just go to him anyway once i get enough money to get me a jigsaw!

Ten, it is very hard to get a good sponsorship from a ball company. you have to be like "Wichita" to get a "good" sponsorship, you have to be a top school. which RMU is surprisingly. i bowled with Bardol at the NEXT tournament in NJ this last year, really chill and cool dude.
