I am just getting back into bowling after a 15 year absence. I just recently switched over to a reactive ball (a BWP, 2000 abralon) from my original Columbia BUD II. I have noticed that I am having a tough time getting a good roll on the ball, I seem to be really spinning it. My track used to be about 1-1/2 or 2" from the thumb, but now my track is more like 3 to 3-1/2". Are there any drills or exercises designed to train me to perform a better release? Any tips on helping me to stay behind the ball and release my wrist properly?I'm not 100% sure what I'm doing wrong, so I may have to try to snag some video and let you guys analyze it. Also, is it possible it is due to the way my ball is drilled up? I've included a pic of the drilling.

I don't believe so. Today I was specifically trying to maintain a cupped wrist, so I don't think that is what it is. I feel like the ball is not coming off my thumb quickly enough, and I might be turning my hand/wrist before my thumb is out. For a long time I had a problem with my thumb sticking, and I used to use ez slide powder on my thumb all the time. I want to get away from this, so I had this ball drilled up with a thumb slug as I was told it would release better than without the slug. I also bought soime thumb carpets and dropped them in.
If I were to try and get some video, what is the best way to try and capture what exactly is going on? I can get some video with my Digital8 camera, so it will be digital 30fps video, it's just not a high speed camera or anything.

Make sure you're not cocking your wrist too far to the side.. It's what my double jointed self was doing

If you have a new or different grip from your old ball, check the pitches in the thumb. To much right pitch will cause you to spin the ball just to clear the thumb

No pitch changes were made, I believe he shortened my span by 1/8" as I used to have to really stretch my hand to fully insert my thumb. Plus after 15 years my hand must not be as flexible as when I was 18.

I also have a problem with turning the hand before getting the thumb out. Figured out that it was actually early timing. I started delaying my push away a little and now it feels allot better and my accuracy at hitting my target has increased a bunch. Might give that a thought. Good luck.

The ball is drilled to hook. I notice the use of the term,"spinning". Is the ball rotating horizontally to the lane? That would be a spinner. You'll want something more around 45 degrees to get the most out of that drill.

With my "old" release I had a very high track. Very close to the thumb hole. My current release has lowered the track remarkably.
Take a look at this article,
the pics are close to where i used to release the ball. This should be a better position for a higher track.
Hope this helps...

thats a early rolling ball on the backend...would be uncontrolable to me...even if iwas spinning the ball...the key is being able to stay behind the ball.. get someone to watch you too see what your wrist is doing and were your coming up off the ball... sounds like your coming around it just my .02
