I know that we all like the high scores and that is what we try to do each week but here is something to think about. Last sunday shot a 636 but thats not what im proud of, the only one open frame is what i was impressed with the most ( split in the 4 frame of first game). Then tonight i bowled a 627 with only one open frame again. Yes the scores are nice but to go that many frames and only one open is something I can live with every night. Am I crazy to think this way or is there something to be said for spare shooting and adjusting quick enough to not leave unmakeable spares. Yes strikes are nice but spares add up too and that is something we all need to remember

you are absolutely right, there is something to be said for good spare shooting and adjusting as the game goes on. if everyone concentrated and worked more on their spare games their scores would go up a lot. there is a sign in the one center i bowl in that states, "Strikes happen, Spares are made". very nicely said i think. if you continue to make your spares and stay around the pocket, eventually the strikes with come. great bowling, and hope you continue to bowl good.

I totally agree with you! I would way rather shoot a clean 600 than a 700 with opens.

same here, i had the first two games tonight with a clean twenty. for some reason started thinking about shooting a clean thirty frames, and wondering how many times i've done it so far this season...wrong thought i guess, second frame of last game sent it wide and left the 1-2-4 and brain cramped on the spare taking out the 1-2. so only 1 open for the night, along with 22 strikes and 11 spares. sometimes it's hard to keep the concentration level up but it's worth it when you can.

Very true...
When I was growing up I was like the normal child Getting frustrated when from not getting strikes.. I was always told Don't worry about it Spares are what is important. Strikes will come.. That is very true.. If you can hit the pocket at all strikes will come. Spares is what needs more work..
When I was bowling regular I shot set after set with only one maybe two opens. Most of them was because of a split..
If your a "Spare Bowler" you can very easily avg 200 because the strikes will come here and there also...

I'm with all the rest and totaly agree. After all, ask anyone about this game and they will tell you, The name of the game is spares. Strikes are nice but spares make the game.

Yep I agree with everyone here, like Bubba said the name of the game is spares. I used to bowl at a harder house when I was 14 and just getting back into the game, the shot was pretty tough and changed a lot from week to week, I held a 200 average but I only had 11-13 strikes a night on a normal night, had a lot of clean nights that year just mainly focusing on spares and held the 200 well, yes their were some nights where I would have more and shoot 7 and there were some nights where I would miss a few and have 570 or so, but there was never anything under that with concentrating on just making the spares. Its a big thing and definately adds up.

I have been struggling alot with my release so it has helped me tremendously with my spare game and it still helps with goals even when struggling. A clean game makes a 220 feel a whole lot better.

I totally agree with you all.
Too get a clean 3 games is not easy, but when you do they make you feel so much better about yourself and your game.
I have only one problem.
I have about 12x 700 plus series to my name, but only have a high of 712
all bar one of these series were clean.
I have a friend that only has 2x 700plus series to his name, but both of them had opens and both were higher than mine.

Well it seems that you are more consistent and he was more of luck... so if you keep up that way youŽll get higher serier pretty soon. :D

This is exactly why I changed my name to "30 Clean". Like everyone, I love getting strikes but getting 30 clean frames during league play is what I shoot for.

It happens, had 2 opens in my 800, was 254-258-289, all 3 games had 10 strikes.

I was watching an old PBA event from the early 2000's on youtube. WRW Jr. was competing and they said a stat that he hadn't missed a spare in competition since 1989. If that's true, maybe that's why he has the most PBA titles...
I used to be a good spare shooter before my 10+ year hiatus. Now I'm trying to remember how to make them again.:)
